India Today on Sanjay Raut's claim on PM's RSS visit
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut has claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is making plans to retire in September and that his recent visit to the RSS headquarters in Nagpur was linked to that, India Today reports. Raut claimed that PM Modi has not visited RSS headquarters in the last 10-11 years but has done so now to say "tata, bye, bye" to group's chief Mohan Bhagwat. Raut's remarks came a day after PM Modi's visit to the RSS headquarters in Nagpur, the report says, marking the second time a Prime Minister has officially visited the organisation's central office. More Myanmar quake survivors pulled from rubble, BBC reports
Four more people have been pulled from rubble nearly 60 hours after a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on Friday, BBC reports, killing at least 1,700 people Myanmar. The survivors were rescued from a collapsed school building in the northern Sagaing region, from which a body was also recovered, Myanmar's fire service said. Hundreds of people remain missing, with desperate search and rescue efforts continuing on Monday in both Myanmar and neighbouring Thailand, the report adds. Read the full report here.
US visas of 300 international students revoked, Hindustan Times
The Donald Trump administration recently revoked the visas of over 300 students, creating panic among several Indian, and other international students living in the US. Hindustan Times reports that Secretary of State Marco Rubio has added to the fears hinting that more student deportations are on the horizon. The crackdown is allegedly aimed at students involved in campus activism, the report says. Read the full report here.
Bulldozers spark tensions at Hyderabad University, NDTV reports
Tension erupted at the University of Hyderabad yesterday after the police clashed with students protesting against the Telangana government's plan to redevelop 400 acres of land next to their campus, NDTV reports. This has led to a political row with the opposition BRS accusing the police of dragging the protesting students by their hair and thrashing them. The report says that several students, who alleged bulldozers and earthmovers were brought as part of the redevelopment plan, were detained but they were released later. The state government, which plans to set up an IT park on the land bordering the varsity campus, reportedly issued a proposal to auction the land. Read the full report here.
Israel continues attacks on Gaza on second day of Eid al-Fitr, Al Jazeera
Israeli forces continue attacks on Palestinians observing second day of Eid al-Fitr in Gaza, killing at least nine people, including many children. Al Jazeera reports that the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) has recovered the bodies of 15 emergency workers, a week after their vehicles came under fire from Israeli forces near Rafah in southern Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Hamas must “lay down its weapons”, exile its leaders, and turn over security in Gaza to Israel in order to reach the “final stage” of the ceasefire.
