1,000 km wide El Nino build up: Massive wall of warm water seen in Pacific Ocean: India Today

A wall of warm water is moving across the Pacific Ocean, and a satellite has been watching it travel in real time, India Today reports. Scientists say what they are seeing is a strong early signal that an El Nino weather event is building, one that could impact rainfall patterns and temperatures across large parts of the world, including India, later this year. The Hindu live updates on Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah's resignation

 

Drawing the curtains on an illustrious political career spanning nearly five decades, The Hindu reports, Karnataka’s Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is learnt to have informed his Cabinet colleagues of his decision to resign from the post during the breakfast that he hosted at his official residence in Bengaluru on May 28. This was confirmed by Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao who attended the breakfast meeting hosted by the Chief Minister. Siddaramaiah visited the Governor’s office Lok Bhavan and submitted the resignation to the post of chief minister to the secretary of Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot as the governor was out of station on a private visit. The report says that while sharing his decision to step down, the Chief Minister informed the Cabinet that he had been asked to do so by the Congress High Command. Read the full report here.

 

US attacks as Israeli forces cross Lebanon’s Litani River, Al Jazeera

The United States has carried out new “defensive” strikes on an Iranian military site allegedly posing a threat to US forces and maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, Al Jazeera reports. In response, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it launched an attack on an “American airbase” and warned of “more decisive” action should US “aggression” continue. The Israeli military issued forced displacement orders for the entire population of southern Lebanon - tens of thousands of people – with troops crossing the strategic Litani River and being confronted by Hezbollah. The report adds, aid agencies have warned of an “absolute catastrophe” in south Lebanon during Israel’s relentless bombardment and intensifying ground invasion. Read the full report here.

 

NDTV on the probe into Pinarayi Vijayan's daughter's firm

NDTV reports that the Enforcement Directorate has intensified its probe into the alleged financial dealings between Cochin Minerals and Rutile Limited (CMRL) and Exalogic Solutions following the large-scale raids carried out across Kerala on Tuesday. Exalogic Solutions, a now defunct IT firm, was owned by former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's daughter Veena T. The report says that notices are likely to be issued to Veena, and others for questioning in the following days. The development has triggered a sharp political confrontation in Kerala. Sixteen pupils killed in Kenya school fire, BBC reports

 

Sixteen students have been killed in a fire at a boarding school in Gilgil, about 120km west of the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, BBC reports. Dozens of other students were injured and taken to hospital - 71 were later discharged and seven admitted for further treatment, Education Minister Julius Ogamba said while visiting the scene of the blaze. The report says that the fire at the Utumishi Girls Academy started in the early hours of Thursday while the students were asleep. Fires are not uncommon in Kenyan boarding schools, with several deadly incidents reported in recent years. Many have been the result of arson, with disgruntled pupils, the report mentions.
