Delhi-NCR submerges as torrential rain breaks 88-year-old record, NDTV

Torrential rainfall in Delhi-NCR that started yesterday, led to widespread waterlogging and severe traffic jams this morning, NDTV reports. The Meteorological Department said that Delhi received 228 mm of rainfall from 8:30 am yesterday to 8:30 am today, marking the highest 24-hour rainfall in June since 1936, when 235.5 mm of rain was recorded. Typically, as per the report, Delhi receives an average of 80.6 mm of rain in June. Read the full report here.

 

1 dead, flight ops hit after portion of roof collapses at Delhi airport: Indian Express

 

At least one person died and eight others were injured after a portion of the roof at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi Airport Terminal-1 collapsed on cars early on Friday. Indian Express reports that all flight departures from terminal were also temporarily suspended. This comes on a day when the national capital has been witnessing incessant rains with the Safdarjung base station seeing 228.1 mm rainfall in the past 24 hours till 8.30 am today. The report says all departures from Terminal 1 are temporarily suspended, and check-in counters are also closed as a safety measure. Al Jazeera's live updates on Iran's presidential election

Iran isset to choose successor to President Ebrahim Raisi who died in a helicopter crash earlier this year, Al Jazeera reports. Polls opened at 8 am local time and will close at 6 pm. Voting can be extended for multiple two-hour periods until midnight. At just over 48 percent, the 2021 vote had the lowest turnout in any presidential election since 1979, the report mentions. Iran’s Supreme Leader Khamenei called on the public to vote in the election, speaking to journalists gathered in Tehran to cover him voting. Read the full report here.

 

13 killed after vehicle rams into stationary truck in Pune-Bengaluru highway: Hindustan Times

Thirteen people, including two children, were killed while four others got injured after their vehicle rammed into a stationary truck on the Pune-Bengaluru National Highway No. 4 in Karnataka’s Haveri district. Hindustan Times reports, as per the Haveri superintendent of police (SP), Anshukumar, that all the deceased and injured were residents of Badravati taluk in Shivamogga district. They were returning home after visiting several pilgrimage sites in Maharashtra and Karnataka. Read the full report here.

 

Biden stumbles in early US presidential debate exchanges as Trump pounces: The Straits Times

 

US President Joe Biden stumbled through early exchanges in June 27’s presidential debate, The Straits Times reports. The performance, the report says, risks exacerbating concerns about his age and intensifying Democratic worries about their candidate’s ability to defeat Republican Donald Trump in November’s election. Biden paused notably and appeared to freeze during one answer on abortion and tripped up in other responses, the report says. It adds that he also misstated numbers such as the amount of jobs created under his administration and the caps for out-of-pocket drug costs he implemented.
