6 Dead, 50 injured after platform collapses during religious event in UP, NDTV reports
Six people have died and more than 50 others were injured after a bamboo platform erected during a religious event in Uttar Pradesh's Baghpat collapsed under the weight of the people. NDTV reports according to police, the Jain community in Baraut had organised a 'Laddoo Mahotsav' today and hundreds of people reached a temple to offer laddoo. A bamboo platform had been erected for the devotees. This platform collapsed under the weight of the people. Baghpat police chief Arpit Vijayvargiya said police and ambulance reached the spot soon after the incident and rushed the injured to the hospital. Read the full report here.
Samsung workers’ union at Tamil Nadu plant registered by DMK government: Indian Express
Months after a protracted labour battle, Indian Express reports that the Tamil Nadu government on Monday formally registered the Samsung India Workers’ Union (SIWU), marking the first recognition of a union in the South Korean electronics giant’s India operations. The decision, delivered on the final day of a six-week deadline imposed by the Madras High Court, was hailed as a major victory for the Samsung workers and the Centre for Indian Trade Unions (CITU) that spearheaded the protests. The union’s registration follows months of unrest at the Samsung factory in Sunguvarchatiram in Kanchipuram district, where more than 1,000 workers staged a 37-day strike starting on September 9, 2024. More than 3,00,000 Palestinians return to devastated northern Gaza, Al Jazeera
Gaza’s Government Media Office said that more than 3,00,000 people have crossed from southern Gaza into the north, Al Jazeera reports, as the United Nations warns that “needs on the ground remain immense”. Al Jazeera’s correspondent in Gaza reports that Palestinians are finding “nothing but destruction” on returning home to the north of the territory. Most of their homes and neighbourhoods now lie in ruins, while many are reuniting with their families for the first time since the war began. Passengers were seen hurling stones at Maha Kumbh-bound trains in Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday, allegedly after finding doors of the wagons closed, Hindustan Times reports. Devotees heading for the Maha Kumbh threw stones at two railway stations in MP’s Chhatarpur district after passengers inside the packed Prayagraj-bound trains did not open the doors for them, the report says. Some purported videos surfaced on social media on Tuesday, showing individuals shouting at what users claimed were Chhatarpur and Harpalpur railway stations. Read the full report here.
Africa News on the international outrage over M23 offensive in DR Congo
The M23 offensive in the Democratic Republic of Congo has sparked a wave of international outrage, Africa News reports. Meeting urgently this Sunday, the UN Security Council strongly condemned the presence of foreign forces in the eastern part of the country. China also expressed a clear and firm position. A short while earlier, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres directly addressed Kigali, urging Rwanda to withdraw its troops and cease its support for the M23.
