Narrow escape for 20 fishermen as boat catches fire near Mumbai, NDTV reports
A sailor's boat caught fire in a sea near Alibaug in Maharashtra, NDTV reports. The accident reportedly happened in the early hours of Friday, between 3 and 4 am. At least 80 percent of the boat got burnt while no injuries or deaths have been reported, the report says. 18-20 fishermen were on board at the time of the incident and all have been rescued. The report says the cause of the fire is not clear. The preliminary investigation suggests that a short circuit might have caused the fire. Read the full report here.
Indian Express: Sensex tanks by over 1,200 points, Nifty by over 400
Domestic stock markets continued their downward spiral on Friday tracking weak Asian stocks, Indian Express reports, amid continued concerns over tariff threats from the US President Donald Trump and also ahead of the release of India’s domestic gross domestic data (GDP) for FY2024-25 and October-December 2024 quarter. The relentless sell-off has left investors reeling, with the Sensex plummeting 16 per cent (12,256 points) and the Nifty tumbling 18 per cent (3,991 points) since their record highs on September 26, 2024. Trump says US will impose additional 10 pc tariff on China, BBC reports
US President Donald Trump said he planned to hit goods from China with a new 10 percent tariff, BBC reports. Imports from China already face taxes at the border of at least 10 percent, after a Trump tariff order that went into effect earlier this month. The report adds that China's ministry of foreign affairs said it "strongly" expressed its "dissatisfaction and resolute opposition" to the plans. Trump also said on Thursday he intended to move forward with threatened 25 percent tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico, which are set to come into effect on March 4. Read the full report here.
47 feared trapped after avalanche hits Uttarakhand's Badrinath: India Today
At least 10 workers have been rescued as 47 still remain trapped after an avalanche hit Uttarakhand's Badrinath and its surrounding areas on Friday. India Today reports that the trapped workers were reportedly employed by a contractor working for a private agency. The avalanche occurred near the BRO site between Mana village and Mana Pass where the workers were engaged in clearing snow from the road to facilitate army movement, District Magistrate Sandeep Tiwari said. TeleSUR on Egypt rejecting Israeli proposals for Gaza governance
The spokesperson for the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, Tamim Khalaf, has deemed Israeli proposals to assume control over the governance of the Gaza Strip as inappropriate and contrary to the Arab stance on Palestine, TeleSUR reports. In statements made to the press, Khalaf emphasised the connection between Gaza and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, asserting that these territories rightfully belong to an independent Palestinian state and should be under the full responsibility and sovereignty of the Palestinian people. Khalaf reiterated Egypt’s opposition to any plans regarding Gaza that undermine fundamental principles of Egyptian and Arab positions. Read the full report here.
