Indian Express on China irked as Indian team names Arunachal Pradesh peak after Dalai Lama
Even as China and India are learnt to have built “some consensus” on disengaging troops along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh, Indian Express reports that Beijing has once again reiterated its territorial claims over Arunachal Pradesh. The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian on Thursday expressed displeasure over a group of Indian mountaineers naming a previously unnamed peak in the state after the 6th Dalai Lama. “It’s illegal, and null and void for India to set up the so-called “Arunachal Pradesh” in Chinese territory,” he said at a media briefing in Beijing, as per the report. Lebanon death toll surpasses 700 as Israel’s bombing campaign continues, Al Jazeera
Israel has dismissed global calls for a ceasefire with Hezbollah and continued a bombing campaign that has killed more than 700 people in Lebanon since Monday, Al Jazeera reports. The White House said that the US-led international call for a ceasefire in Lebanon was “coordinated” with Israel, despite Israel rejecting the proposal. US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said Washington will continue backing Israel as Tel Aviv secures a new $8.7bn US military assistance package and dismissed “red lines” in Israel’s assaults on Gaza and Lebanon, the report adds. NYC mayor charged with taking bribes and illegal campaign funds, BBC reports
New York City Mayor Eric Adams is due to be arraigned in a federal courthouse on Friday to face five counts of criminal offences, including bribery, wire fraud and soliciting illegal foreign campaign donations. BBC reports that an indictment unveiled on Thursday alleges Adams sought and accepted illegal campaign funds and over $100,000 in luxury travel benefits from Turkish businessmen and an official seeking to gain his influence. As per the report, Adams, 64, is a former police officer who was elected to lead the most populous US city nearly three years ago on a promise to be tough on crime. The mayor has denied any wrongdoing and rejected growing calls for his resignation. Read the full report here.
Jhumpa Lahiri turns down US museum award over Keffiyeh ban, The Wire
Author Jhumpa Lahiri has declined an award from New York’s Noguchi Museum citing the fact that it fired three employees for wearing keffiyeh scarves, an emblem of Palestinian solidarity, The Wire reports. Lahiri is of Indian origin. Her 1999 debut collection of short-stories, Interpreter of Maladies, won the Pulitzer Prize that year. The report adds that the museum, founded nearly 40 years ago by Japanese-American designer and sculptor Isamu Noguchi, announced in August that employees could not wear clothing or accessories that expressed “political messages, slogans or symbols” during their working hours. Hindustan Times: IMD issues heavy rainfall alerts for Maharashtra, Himachal and other states
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an ‘orange’ alert on Friday, Hindustan Times reports, predicting heavy rainfall in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Uttarakhand, east Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal. According to the weather department, Delhi is also likely to witness light rainfall throughout the day, the report adds.
