India Today: Putin to visit India soon, first since start of Ukraine war

Russia confirmed on Thursday, as per India Today, that President Vladimir Putin would visit India soon following an invitation from Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Moscow last year. This will be the first visit by Putin, who has cultivated close ties with PM Modi, since the war with Ukraine broke out in 2022. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said preparations were underway for Putin's visit to India, the report adds, even though he didn't give any specific dates. Read the full report here.

 

Tamil Nadu Assembly passes resolution against Waqf Bill, Indian Express

 

Indian Express reports that the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly passed a resolution Thursday urging the Union government to withdraw the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024. It called the bill a direct infringement on the religious and property rights of the Muslim community. Chief Minister M K Stalin, while moving the resolution, accused the BJP-led central government of “systematic discrimination” against minorities and non-BJP-ruled states, the report added. Trump announces 25% tariffs on car imports to US, BBC reports

US President Donald Trump has announced new import taxes of 25% on cars and car parts coming into the US, BBC reports. Trump said the latest tariffs would come into effect on April 2, with charges on businesses importing vehicles starting the next day. Taxes on parts are set to start in May or later. Indian fisherman, lodged in Pakistan's Karachi jail since 2022, dies by suicide: Hindustan Times

An Indian fisherman allegedly died by suicide at a prison in Karachi’s Malir area in Pakistan on Wednesday, Hindustan Times reports as per Dawn.com. The report claimed that Indian fishermen are often detained for illegal fishing, as some maritime boundaries are poorly marked, and many boats lack the technology to determine their exact location. The deceased, arrested in February 2022 by Docks police, had been jailed in Malir by the West Karachi magistrate later that same month, the report said. Read the full report here.

 

South Korea battles worst ever wildfires as death toll hits 27, The Straits Times

 

Wildfires raging in South Korea doubled in size on Thursday from a day earlier, The Straits Times reports, as the authorities called the blazes the country’s worst natural fire disaster. The report says at least 27 people have been killed and historic temples incinerated in the fire. More than 33,000ha has been charred or were still burning in the largest of the fires that began in the central Uiseong county, making it the biggest single forest fire in South Korea’s history.
