Woman raped in Kolkata law college, 3 men arrested, Indian Express
The Kolkata police said on Friday they have arrested three men for allegedly raping a woman inside a law college earlier this week, Indian Express reports. According to a police officer, a case was registered based on the complainant’s letter, alleging the involvement of three men. “The rape happened on June 25 in between 7.30 pm to 10.50 pm,” said an officer. High tide alert in Mumbai after record rainfall, The Hindustan Times reports
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai in anticipation of heavy rainfall until the end of June, Hindustan Times reports. The authorities have also issued a high tide alert and asked visitors to avoid Juhu Beach during the high tide period. Since the monsoon started on May 26, the earliest in 75 years, the report adds that Colaba has witnessed heavy rains, while suburban regions have received less rainfall. Read the full report here.
Canada passes law fast-tracking 'nation building' projects to counter Trump, BBC reports
Canada's parliament has passed a landmark bill giving Prime Minister Mark Carney's government new powers to fast-track major national projects, BBC reports. The One Canadian Economy Act was passed by the Senate on Thursday, and allows the cabinet to streamline approvals processes and bypass certain provisions of federal laws for projects that could boost the economy. The report adds that supporters have argued the legislation is a critical step in reducing Canada's dependence on the United States, amid trade tensions sparked by President Donald Trump's tariffs. India Today on F-35 refusing to leave Kerala even after 13 days
Amid monsoon showers, shifting sun and round-the-clock CISF watch, the British $110-million F-35 stealth fighter jet will complete a fortnight of being stranded on the tarmac of Kerala's Thiruvananthapuram airport on Friday. India Today reports that multiple attempts have been made to get it back into the sky, but all in vain. Now with the aircraft nearing two weeks of being grounded in India, the Royal British Navy is making a renewed push to get it airborne. Iran says no plan for new US nuclear talks, The Straits Times
The Straits Times reports that Iran denied it is set to resume nuclear talks with the United States after the end of a 12-day war with Israel, and accused Washington of exaggerating the impact of US strikes. The most serious conflict yet between Israel and Iran derailed nuclear talks between Iran and the United States, yet US President Donald Trump said Washington would hold discussions with Tehran next week, with his special envoy Steve Witkoff expressing hope “for a comprehensive peace agreement”. But the report adds that Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi shut down what he said was “speculation” that Tehran would come to the table. Read the full report here.
