India's former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, 92, passed away on Thursday evening. The Hindu reports that important personalities from all over the world and India are expressing their condolences. The Hindu is keeping tabs on these reactions and at the same time unfolding various aspects of Singh's life to highlight contributions made by him in India's development. In a recently published Obituary writer defines Singh as a gentleman politician, someone who was a reluctant politician. President Droupadi Murmu on Friday paid homage to former prime minister Manmohan Singh at his residence, the report mentions. While British High Commissioner to India Lindy Cameron calls Singh “a great Prime Minister, Finance Minister and global statesman who advanced India’s interests through bold economic reforms and played a key role in putting India in its rightful place on the world stage and stabilising the global economy after the financial crisis”. SC frowns upon farmers objecting to hospitalisation of Jagjit Singh Dallewal: Bar and Bench
As per the report by Bar and Bench The Supreme Court of India expressed strong reservations about protesting farmers objecting to and obstructing attempts by Punjab government to provide medical aid to farmers' leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal. Dallewal is on a fast unto death as part of the protests against the Central government for minimum support price for crops. The Bench of Justices Surya Kant and Sudhanshu Dhulia said it has "serious doubts" about the protestors creating such obstructions, the report further mentions. The Bench was hearing a contempt of court petition filed against the Chief Secretary of State of Punjab for not complying with the December 20, wherein the State was asked to convince fasting farmers' leader to go to hospital. The bench called upon the State to see to it that Dallewal is provided medical care, the report highlights. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta submitted that the State government ought to take all measures to ensure that Dallewal is hospitalised. Read the full report here.
Hindustan times on 26/11 terror attack accused Abdul Rehman Makki's death in Pakistan
The report by the Hindustan times suggests Abdul Rehman Makki, one of the accused in the Mumbai terror attacks on November 26, 2008 passed away due to a heart attack. Abdul Rehman Maaki was the deputy chief of the Jamaat-ud-Dawa and brother-in-law of the alleged mastermind of the attacks, Hafiz Saeed, the further says. Makki had been sentenced to six months imprisonment in connection with a terror financing case in 2020 by an anti terrorism court and since then, he had maintained a low profile. Jamaat-ud-Dawa confirmed that he had been ill for the past few days and was undergoing treatment for diabetes at a private hospital in Lahore, report mentions. He was also designated as a global terrorist by the United Nations in 2023, subjecting him to an assets freeze, travel ban and arms embargo. Read the full report here.
Peru declares environmental emergency due to oil spill, TeleSUR reports
The Peruvian government declared a 90-day environmental state of emergency for a marine area along the northern coast On Thursday, reports TeleSUR English. The northern coast was affected by an oil spill in the province of Talara in Piura, a region near the border with Ecuador. The report says this measure aims to ensure the sustainable management of the area and the execution of recovery and remediation efforts to mitigate environmental pollution. The decree approved an immediate and short-term action plan that will include containment, cleanup and recovery efforts in the affected areas, with priority given to protecting ecosystems and the health of local communities, report suggests. Before approving the emergency declaration, the ministry requested detailed reports from the agencies involved and held meetings in Piura with entities affiliated with the Ministries of Energy and Mines, Health, Foreign Trade and Tourism, Defense, and Agrarian Development. BBC reports on South Korea votes to impeach acting president Han Duck-soo
Two weeks after parliament voted to impeach its President Yoon Suk Yeol, South Korea has again voted to impeach its acting president Han Duck-soo, says the report by BBC. Han was supposed to lead the country out of its political turmoil, but opposition MPs argued that he was refusing demands to complete Yoon's impeachment process, the report highlights. Prime minister Han took over the role after President Yoon was impeached by parliament following his failed attempt to impose martial law on 3 December. The report also says that chaos erupted in parliament as the vote was being held. Han will be suspended from his duties as soon as he is officially notified by parliament. The opposition first filed an impeachment motion against Han on Thursday after he blocked the appointment of three judges that parliament had chosen to oversee Yoon's case. Read the full report here.
