Indian Express on banned Jamaat-e-Islami set to field three Independents in Kashmir first phase polls

With Tuesday marking the last date for filing of nomination for the first phase of the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections, Indian Express reports that the banned outfit Jamaat-e-Islami is set to field at least three of its former members as Independent candidates from various constituencies of South Kashmir. The socio-political organisation was planning to field its seven candidates as Independents in the first phase of polls scheduled for September 18. But the report says that three of them backed out at the last moment. Read the full report here.

 

Police use water cannons against Nabanna protesters, Hindustan Times

 

Protestors at Nabanna are being sprayed with water cannons and lobbed with tear gas to get them to disperse, Hindustan Times reports. Students' organisations have called for a ‘Nabanna Abhijan’ rally, marching till the West Bengal state secretariat today, August 27, to peacefully protest the RG Kar incident. The report adds, the Kolkata Police has termed the rally ‘illegal’ and the government has issued prohibitory orders in the Nabanna area. Read the full report here.

 

Foreign workers trapped for days in tunnel after landslide in Thailand still alive, The Straits Times

Three workers trapped inside a tunnel that is under construction in north-east Thailand are still alive, Pak Chong district chief Kanatchon Sricharoen said. The Straits Times reports, as per the chief, that the authorities’ radar scanner had detected vital signs from the workers. A Chinese foreman, a Chinese backhoe operator and a Myanmar dump truck driver became trapped inside the tunnel after a landslide on Aug 24. The tunnel being constructed in Tambon Chan Thuek in Pak Chong district is part of the Thai-Chinese high-speed railway in Nakhon Ratchasima. Rescuers from state and private agencies have been pumping oxygen into the tunnel to keep the workers alive and are clearing the soil that slid down the mountain, trapping the trio. Nursing trainee raped in Maharashtra, NDTV reports

A 19-year-old nursing trainee was raped, allegedly by an auto-rickshaw driver, in Maharashtra's Ratnagiri district, NDTV reports. According to preliminary information, the victim had taken an auto-rickshaw ride home when the driver offered her drinking water. The water was spiked and the teenager lost consciousness. The driver then allegedly took the victim to a deserted place and sexually assaulted her, the report adds. Read the full report here.

 

Al Jazeera Infographic: Israel killed 40,000 people in Gaza

 

Israeli attacks have killed more than 40,000 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip in the 320 days since October 7, Al Jazeera reports. This includes almost 17,000 children. That’s 2.6 percent of all children in Gaza who are now dead. At least 53 children have been killed every day since October 7, the report says, and 72 men and women are killed in Israeli strikes, every single day. Read the full report here.
