Hindustan Times on Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut sentenced to 15 days in prison

A metropolitan magistrate court in Mazgaon on Thursday sentenced Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut to 15 days of simple imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹25,000 in a criminal defamation case. Hindustan Times reports that the case was filed by Medha Somaiya, wife of BJP leader Kirit Somaiya, over Raut's allegations of her involvement in a ₹100 crore "toilet fraud". The allegedly defamatory statements were made by Raut in April 2022. The report adds that while taking cognisance of the defamation complaint, the court observed that the words spoken by the MP had harmed the reputation of the complainant. Woman dies after falling into Mumbai drain, NDTV reports

 

NDTV reports that Mumbai Police have filed a case against the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and a contractor over the death of a 45-year-old woman after falling into a drain during heavy rain yesterday. The civic body has also ordered an inquiry into the incident that occurred late night in Andheri. The report mentions that the victim has been identified as Vimal Anil Gaikwad. Her husband, who had filed the police complaint, said Vimal was the breadwinner of the family. The BMC, facing charges of negligence, said it has formed a three-member panel, led by a Deputy Commissioner, the report adds, and sought a report within three days. Read the full report here.

 

Trudeau survives vote of confidence in Canadian parliament, The Straits Times

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau easily survived a vote of confidence on Wednesdat after his main political rival failed to muster enough support to end nine years of Liberal Party rule, The Straits Times reports. Legislators in the House of Commons voted 211-120 to defeat a motion by the official opposition Conservative party declaring a lack of confidence in Trudeau's minority Liberal government.Trudeau, whose popularity has slumped amid unhappiness over rising prices and a housing crisis, the report adds, became more politically vulnerable this month when the smaller New Democratic Party tore up a 2022 deal to keep him in power until an election scheduled for end-October 2025. CBFC says Kangana Ranaut’s ‘Emergency’ can be released after suggested cuts: Indian Express

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) on Thursday informed the Bombay High Court that its revising committee suggested some cuts for the Kangana Ranaut film Emergency before its release. Indian Express reports that the CBFC was responding to a plea by co-producer Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited, which alleged that the CBFC was “illegally” and “arbitrarily” withholding certification for the film. It is directed and co-produced by BJP MP Ranaut, who also plays the role of former prime minister Indira Gandhi. Read the full report here.

 

BBC: US and allies call for 21-day ceasefire but Israeli strikes in Lebanon continue

 

The Israeli military says it hit around 75 Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon and the Bekaa region overnight, BBC reports. The statement came hours after the US, UK and other allies called for a 21-day ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah. The allies said the fighting posed an "unacceptable risk of a broader regional escalation". The Lebanese health ministry says 13 people have been killed by Israeli air strikes overnight; the ministry says more than 550 have been killed since Monday. Read the full report here.
