Cabinet clears Rs 7,280 crore rare earths scheme amid China's export curbs: India Today
India has taken a major step towards reducing its dependence on imports for critical technologies, India Today reports. The Union Cabinet has approved a new scheme to promote the manufacturing of sintered rare earth permanent magnets (REPMs), which are essential for electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, electronics and defence equipment. The report says that the government has cleared a financial outlay of Rs 7,280 crore to set up 6,000 metric tonnes per year of fully integrated REPM manufacturing capacity in India. The leadership battle within the Karnataka Congress sharpened this week, Hindustan Times reports, with chief minister Siddaramaiah publicly urging the party high command to “put a full stop to the confusion”. Deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar confirmed the existence of a “secret deal” involving “five-six” senior leaders on power-sharing - while still refusing to spell it out. At least 10 people killed in Indonesia floods, landslides: Al Jazeera
Torrential monsoon rains have set off destructive floods and landslides across Indonesia’s Sumatra island, killing at least 10 people and leaving dozens of others missing, according to local authorities. Al Jazeera reports that days of relentless rainfall since Monday forced rivers in North Sumatra province to overflow, sending mud, rocks and uprooted trees crashing through villages in six regencies. The National Police said on Wednesday that rescue teams were struggling to reach isolated communities as damaged roads, unstable slopes and persistent downpours continue to slow operations, the report says. Pan Masala baron's daughter-in-law dies by suicide at South Delhi home, NDTV reports
The daughter-in-law of Pan Masala baron Kamal Kishor Chaurasia, the man behind Kamla Pasand and Rajshree brands, has died, allegedly by suicide, at the family's home in south Delhi's posh Vasant Vihar, NDTV reports. Deepti Chaurasia (40), who was married to Kamal Kishor's son Arpit, was found dead at the family's plush home yesterday at noon. According to sources, she hanged herself using a dupatta. A note found in her room states that she does not blame anyone, according to reports. Read the full report here.
At least four killed as major fire engulfs Hong Kong apartment blocks, BBC reports

At least four people have been killed in a major fire engulfing apartment blocks in Hong Kong, BBC reports. The government says three people are in a critical condition, with another in a serious condition. One of those killed is a firefighter, the fire service told the BBC.
