Indian Express on Supreme Court statement: ‘Can’t call any part of India as Pakistan’

The Supreme Court said on Wednesday calling any part of India “Pakistan” is contrary to the country’s territorial integrity, Indian Express reports, as it heard a matter over the remarks made by a Karnataka High Court judge earlier this month. Presiding over a five-judge bench, Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud said this while hearing the matter in which it had taken suo motu cognisance of video clips of the comments made by the Karnataka High Court judge. The bench, also comprising Justices Sanjiv Khanna, B R Gavai, Surya Kant and Hrishikesh Roy, took suo motu cognisance of the matter on September 20 and sought a report from the high court’s Registrar General on the matter. High Court questions cops on Badlapur accused death, NDTV reports

 

Two days after Badlapur sex assault accused Akshay Shinde was shot dead in custody, NDTV reports that the Bombay High Court asked tough questions to police about the circumstances leading to the 24-year-old's death. The court was hearing a petition by Shinde's father, who has alleged that his son was killed in a fake encounter, the report adds, and has demanded a probe by a Special Investigation Team. Akshay Shinde (24) was accused of sexually assaulting two minor girls at a school in Badlapur where he worked as a sweeper. He was being taken from Taloja Jail to Badlapur Monday when he snatched a policeman's pistol and opened fire. An assistant inspector was injured and Shinde was killed in retaliatory firing, police have said. Read the full report here.

 

Russian parliament backs ban on adoptions from countries that allow gender changes: The Straits Times

The Russian parliament on Wednesday gave its initial backing to legislation that would ban nationals from countries that allow people to change their gender from adopting Russian children, The Straits Times reports. The parliament called it a move it said was essential to uphold "traditional values," as per the report. Russia itself last year introduced a ban on people legally or medically changing their gender, part of a widening crackdown on LGBT rights. Read the full report here.

 

Rahul says would fight in Parliament, take to streets to restore J&K statehood: Hindustan Times

Hindustan Times reports that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday reiterated the promise of restoring Jammu and Kashmir (J&K)’s statehood, saying they would fight for it in Parliament as well as take to the streets. He said the statehood was snatched because the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) wanted to run the region through the lieutenant governor (LG) and outsiders to end the prosperity of the people. “Until the lieutenant governor is here, outsiders will continue to get benefits at the expense of the people of J&K,” he said at a rally in Jammu. Israel kills 53 Palestinians in 24 hours in Gaza, Al Jazeera reports

 

At least 53 Palestinians have been killed across the Gaza Strip in Israeli attacks on their homes and shelters in the past 24 hours, Al Jazeera reported according to the Palestinian Civil Defence. One person was killed overnight on Wednesday after a house was targeted in Beit Lahiya in the north of the enclave, and in the Nuseirat refugee camp, two Palestinians were killed when their tent was hit by an Israeli air strike. The report adds that those killed in central Gaza’s Nuseirat were from the al-Ejla family who lost 11 relatives in August. Read the full report here.
