India-China disengagement begins at Depsang and Demchok, Hindustan Times
The Indian Army and the Chinese Army will complete disengagement by October 28-29, and the patrolling will begin on October 30-31. Hindustan Times reports that the disengagement will be applicable only for Depsang and Demchok and not for other friction points. Both the sides will fall back to positions they held before April 2020 and will patrol areas where they did till that date. Read the full report here.
Indian Express on Cyclone Dana likely to weaken into deep depression in next 6 hours
One casualty was reported in cyclone Dana in West Bengal, according to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, while no deaths were reported in Odisha, Indian Express reports. The cyclonic storm Dana is likely to move northwestwards across north Odisha and weaken gradually into a deep depression during the next six hours. Flight operations, which were suspended at both Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in West Bengal and Bhubaneswar Airport in view of the cyclone, resumed at 8 am today, while train services under the Eastern Railways have also resumed. South Korea condemns Russia’s move to seal defence pact with North Korea, Al Jazeera
South Korea has expressed “grave concern” over Russia’s bid to seal a defence pact with North Korea, which has been accused of supplying troops to Moscow for possible deployment in its war in Ukraine, Al Jazeera reports. Russia’s lower house of parliament on Thursday voted unanimously to endorse the treaty that commits Moscow and Pyongyang to providing “mutual assistance” if either side is attacked. The country’s upper house is expected to follow suit soon. Seoul’s denunciation comes a day after South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol condemned the deployment of North Korean troops to Russia, the report adds. Read the full report here.
The Wire on Jharkhand elections: Hard bargaining in INDIA Bloc over Seat-Sharing Deal
Ahead of the Jharkhand assembly elections, The Wire reports that the members of the INDIA bloc have been bargaining hard for their share of seats even as the alliance members in the state – Congress, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) Liberation have released the first list of candidates for their respective parties, giving an indication of the final contours of the alliance’s seat-sharing deal. While Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren had announced on October 19, after meeting Congress leaders, that the two would contest 70 of the total 81 seats in the state, the division of seats between the two are yet to be formally announced. Tropical Storm Trami leaves 66 dead in Philippines: The Straits Times
Residents of the northern Philippines used spades and rakes to clear their homes of mud and debris, The Straits Times reported, while others still awaited rescue as the death toll from Tropical Storm Trami rose to 66. Tens of thousands remained displaced after fleeing floods driven by a torrential downpour that dumped two months’ worth of rainfall in just two days in some areas.
