NDTV on big setback for Siddaramaiah in court

Myanmar anti-coup forces target Mandalay in struggle to oust military, Al Jazeera reports

Myanmar’s second-biggest city is beginning to feel like a city under siege, Al Jazeera reports. But while armed groups might be at the gates of Mandalay, most residents do not consider them the enemy. The report says that while Myanmar’s borderlands, home to many of the country’s ethnic minorities, have been ravaged by conflict for decades, the mostly Bamar areas in the heart of the country had not seen conflict since World War II. That all changed when the military overthrew Aung San Suu Kyi’s democratically elected government in 2021, plunging the country into a political crisis and civil war. Read the full report here.

Indian Express on Malayalam actor Mukesh arrested, released on bail on rape charges

Actor-legislator M Mukesh was formally arrested Tuesday on rape charges but released on bail later on the back of an anticipatory bail he secured from an Ernakulam court earlier this month. Indian Express reports that the development came hours after the Kerala High Court denied anticipatory bail to fellow actor and former Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA) general secretary Siddique on similar allegations. In her complaint, a former woman actor in the Malayalam film industry had alleged that Mukesh had raped her in 2010 at his flat in Kochi promising a membership in the actors’ association AMMA. The same woman had complained against another actor Edavela Babu, also a prominent figure in AMMA. The report mentions that all three allegations came against the backdrop of the Hema Committee report on the working conditions of women professionals in the industry. Read the full report here.
