Hindustan Times on Muslim teacher heckled, abused at Ghaziabad society

An Urdu teacher, who provides private tuition in a society at Ghaziabad's Crossings Republik, was allegedly abused and heckled by a resident in the common area and forced to chant “Jai Shri Ram”, Hindustan Times reports. Manoj Kumar, the resident allegedly involved in the incident, was arrested by the police on Wednesday and charged under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for wrongful restraint and intentional insult among others, the report adds. Police said the accused, a 36-year-old businessman, told them during questioning that he was under the influence of alcohol when he heckled the teacher. Read the full report here.

 

Indian Express live updates on Cyclone Dana

 

After reviewing cyclone preparedness in Odisha, Chief Minister Mohan Majhi said evacuation will be completed in next few hours. Indian Express reports that heavy rainfall lashed parts of West Bengal and Odisha today as the states braced for the landfall of cyclone Dana later in the night. The storm, that is currently over east-central Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm and make landfall between Bhitarkanika National Park and Dhamra port. Over 300 trains have been cancelled and flight operations at Kolkata airport have also been suspended from 6 pm today till 9 am on Friday, the report adds. Read the full report here.

 

Commonwealth leaders to defy UK on slavery reparations, BBC reports

Commonwealth heads of government are preparing to defy the United Kingdom and agree plans to examine reparatory justice for the transatlantic slave trade, the BBC reports. Downing Street insists the issue is not on the agenda for the summit of 56 Commonwealth countries, which begins in the Pacific island nation of Samoa on Friday, the report adds. But it is said that officials were negotiating an agreement to conduct further research and begin a “meaningful conversation” about an issue which could potentially leave the UK owing billions of pounds in reparations. Fresh bomb threats to 85 IndiGo, Air India, Vistara and Akasa Air flights, India Today

Amid a spate of bomb hoaxes on several flights for the past many days, at least 85 flights of IndiGo, Air India, Vistara and Akasa Air received similar threats on Thursday. India Today reports that with this, over 250 flights have been impacted by these threats for the past 10 days. Prior to this, more than 170 flights received bomb threats, with a majority of them originating from social media platforms. These threats turned out later to be hoaxes, inconveniencing hundreds of passengers and creating a security headache for paramilitary personnel and aviation authorities, the report adds. More than 140 Rohingya refugees land in Indonesia: The Straits Times

 

At least 146 Rohingya refugees landed in western Indonesia on Thursday,The Straits Times reports, as arrivals of members of the persecuted minority pick up again as sea conditions calm. The mostly Muslim ethnic Rohingya are heavily persecuted in Myanmar and thousands risk their lives each year on long and dangerous sea journeys to reach Malaysia or Indonesia. The report says that the boat was carrying 64 men, 62 women and 20 children when it landed in Pantai Labu town in North Sumatra province. The refugees were taken to a temporary shelter at a local district office where they will await transfer. Read the full report here.
