Fierce protests in Turkiye after Erdogan rival jailed, BBC reports
Tens of thousands of protesters have taken part in demonstrations across Turkiye after the main rival to the country's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was formally arrested and charged with corruption, BBC reports. Ekrem Imamoglu, the mayor of Istanbul, was due to be selected as the Republican People's Party's (CHP) 2028 presidential nominee in a vote on Sunday. In response to his arrest, the report says that Sunday night saw a ramping up of the worst unrest the country has seen in more than a decade - with protesters fired upon with tear gas and rubber bullets. Indian Express: BMC officials begin demolition at Mumbai studio where Kamra shot show
In the latest developments amid the ongoing controversy, Indian Express reports that Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officials have begun demolition of unauthorised structures at Mumbai studio Habitat Comedy Club where Kamra shot his show which had the ‘traitor’ jibe aimed at Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. Meanwhile, Minister Pratap Sarnaik confirmed that comedian, who faces an FIR at Khar police station, is currently in Pondicherry. The incident occurred after Kamra’s performance at the studio, where he mocked Shinde and referred to him as a “gaddar” (traitor), the report says. Read the full report here.
The Wire on the arrest of Sambhal Mosque Chairperson
Zafar Ali, the chairperson of the managing committee of the Shahi Jama Masjid in Sambhal, was arrested on Sunday, The Wire reports, in a case related to alleged criminal conspiracy behind the violence that broke out during a controversial survey of the mosque in November last year. A legal source close to Ali – himself an advocate – alleged that Ali was arrested on March 23 – exactly four months after the violent incident of November 24, 2024 – to prevent him from appearing before a judicial commission in Lucknow and testify. Delhi HC derosters Justice Varma after cash recovered from his home, India Today
India Today reports that the judicial duties of Delhi High Court judge Yashwant Varma were immediately withdrawn on the order of the Delhi High Court on Monday. This decision, reflected in the updated supplementary cause list, follows recent developments surrounding a fire incident at his residence on March 14, 2025, which led to the discovery of a substantial amount of cash. Justice Varma has denied the allegations, the report mentions, asserting that neither he nor his family owns the cash. He has claimed that the incident was part of a conspiracy to malign his image. Israeli strike on Gaza hospital kills Hamas leader, Al Jazeera reports
An Israeli air strike on a hospital in southern Gaza has killed at least two people, including a senior Hamas official and a 16-year-old boy, Al Jazeera reports. Ismail Barhoum, a member of Hamas’s political bureau, was killed while undergoing treatment at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis late on Sunday, Hamas said in a statement.
