Chandrayaan-3 lander all set for touchdown: The Hindu

Chandrayaan-3’s lander module with the rover in its belly on Wednesday will attempt to land on the Moon at 6.04 pm. The Hindu reports this comes four years after its predecessor crashed on the lunar surface minutes before touchdown. Around 5.45 p.m., the Mission Operations Complex (MOX) at ISRO Telemetry, Tracking, and Command Network (ISTRAC), Bengaluru, will initiate the powered descent of the lander module. If all goes as per plan, it would make India the fourth country to achieve this feat after the US, Russia and China. Read the full report here.

 

Indian Express on under-construction railway bridge collapse in Mizoram

 

Indian Express reports that at least 17 workers have died in Mizoram after an under-construction railway bridge collapsed near Aizawl on Wednesday. Rescue operations are in progress as more workers are feared to be trapped under the debris. The incident took place at Sairang in Aizawl district, the report adds. Read the full report here.

 

Zimbaweans vote with inflation in mind, BBC reports

Zimbabweans are voting in presidential and parliamentary elections, BBC reports after a campaign dominated by the country's soaring inflation. The day has been declared a holiday to allow the 6.62 million registered voters a chance cast a ballot. President Emmerson Mnangagwa faces 10 challengers. The report mentions that a presidential candidate needs more than 50 percent of the vote to win. If there is no outright victor, a presidential run-off will be held in six weeks on 2 October, it adds. Read the full report here.

 

Two planes cleared to take off, land at same time at Delhi airport, NDTV

A major mishap was averted at the Delhi airport on Wednesday morning as a Vistara Airlines aircraft was given permission for take-off while another was in the process of landing. NDTV reports that the take-off was aborted after instructions from ATC. The report describes the situation wherein flight UK725 from Delhi to Bagdogra was taking off from the newly inaugurated runway and the Vistara flight from Ahmedabad to Delhi, after landing on a parallel runway, was moving towards the end of the runway. According to airport officials, if the flight taking off was not stopped at the right time, a major accident could have happened. Read the full report here.

 

Al Jazeera: Hawaii officials seek help in identifying remains of wildfire victims

 

Officials in Hawaii have urged residents to submit DNA samples to help in the identification of human remains found in the ashes of a fast-moving wildfire on the island of Maui. Al Jazeera reports that the fire killed at least 115 people earlier this month. At least 1,100 people are still missing. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is seeking family members’ help in identifying the remains of the dead. Read the full report here.
