Maoist carrying Rs 1 crore bounty among 12 killed in Chhattisgarh encounter: Indian Express

Indian Express reports that at least 12 suspected Maoists, including one carrying a Rs 1 crore bounty, were killed in an exchange of fire with security forces which started on Monday inside a tiger reserve in Chhattisgarh’s Gariaband district near the border with Odisha. Nikhil Rakhecha, Superintendent of Police, Gariaband, told The Indian Express Jayram alias Chalapathi, an alleged member of the Maoists’ Central Committee, was killed in the exchange of fire that took place late Monday and early Tuesday in the forest along the Chhattisgarh-Odisha border. Rakhecha said Reddy, 60, who was a school dropout, was a resident of Andhra Pradesh, the report adds. Read the full report here.

 

BBC on the executive orders did Trump sign on day one?

 

Donald Trump has issued a flurry of executive orders on everything from immigration, climate to pardons, BBC reports, after being sworn in as the 47th president of the United States. The report says that the Republican quickly set about using his new powers to sign off on executive actions, presidential memorandums and executive orders on a host of policy priorities. Executive orders carry the weight of law, but can be overturned by subsequent presidents or the courts. Several of those enacted by Trump will face legal challenges. Read the full report here.

 

Hindustan Times on Delhi assembly election: 699 candidates file nominations

As many as 699 candidates are in the fray for the February 5 polls to the 70-member Delhi Assembly, marking a slight increase from the number of people who fought the elections in 2020. Hindustan Times reports that five years ago, 672 candidates had fought the Delhi Assembly polls. According to the Delhi chief electoral officer, the high-profile New Delhi where A supremo Arvind Kejriwal is locked in a keen contest against the BJP's Parvesh Verma and the Congress' Sandeep Dikshit, has the highest number of nominees at 23. Official thrashes woman at Madhya Pradesh government office, NDTV

An employee of the revenue department was suspended after a video of him thrashing a woman at the tehsildar's office in Madhya Pradesh's Bhind district surfaced on social media, NDTV reports. The incident occurred at the office of tehsildar in Gohad on Monday, and the video went viral on social media soon after. Gohad's sub-divisional officer (SDM) Parag Jain said he suspended Naval Kishore Gaud, a clerk (assistant grade 3), with immediate effect as he appeared to be involved in indecency and assault on a woman. Following a complaint by the victim, the report says that a case has been registered against Gaud, and further investigation is underway, Gohad police station in-charge Manish Dhakad said. Israeli settlers attack West Bank villages under army’s protection, Al Jazeera reports

 

Israeli settlers have set vehicles and properties on fire under the protection of Israeli forces while also injuring at least 21 Palestinians across the occupied West Bank, Al Jazeera reports. Jalal Bashir, head of Jinasfut village council, was quoted as saying by Wafa news agency on Monday evening that the attacks took place in the villages of Jinasfut and Funduq, east of Qalqilya. He added that dozens of Israeli settlers raided Jinasfut and set fire to three homes, a nursery and a workshop. The report says settlers also set several vehicles owned by Palestinian residents ablaze. Read the full report here.
