CBI questions ex-R G Kar principal for 6th day, Indian Express

Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officers continued to question of R G Kar Medical College and Hospital former principal Dr Sandip Ghosh regarding the rape and murder of a young doctor on night shift on hospital premises for the sixth consecutive day on Wednesday. A report by Indian Express says that Ghosh may also be subjected to a polygraph test. Healthcare services remain affected at state-run hospitals in West Bengal, the report adds, as junior doctors continued their strike for the 13th consecutive day. A 31-year-old postgraduate doctor was brutally raped and murdered inside the seminar hall of the hospital on August 9, sparking national outrage. Read the full report here.

 

State child rights panel chief says Badlapur school tried cover-up: Hindustan Times

 

The chairperson of the Maharashtra State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (MSCPCR) on Wednesday criticised the handling of a sexual abuse case at a school in Badlapur, Hindustan Times reports, saying the school administration attempted to cover up the crime rather than supporting the victims' families in filing a police complaint. MSCPCR chief Susieben Shah also stressed the need for stringent actions under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The incident in question involves two four-year-old girls who were allegedly sexually assaulted by a 23-year-old male cleaner employed by the school. Read the full report here.

 

Thailand says mpox detected in European who travelled from Africa

Thailand has detected an mpox case in a European man who arrived from Africa last week, Al Jazeera reports, and is awaiting test results to determine the strain. Thongchai Keeratihattayakorn, head of the Department of Disease Control, announced on Wednesday that the 66-year-old patient arrived in Thailand on August 14 from an African country, which was not identified. The authorities are treating the case as if it were the Clade 1 variant of mpox. Read the full report here.

 

Bus crash in Iran kills at least 28 Pakistani pilgrims, BBC reports

BBC reports that a bus carrying Pakistani pilgrims has overturned in Iran, killing at least 28 passengers. The crash happened on Tuesday night in the central Iranian province of Yazd and was due to a defective braking system. Another 23 passengers were injured, 14 of them critically, Pakistan's ambassador to Iran Muhammad Mudassir Tipu told the BBC. The pilgrims were travelling from the Sindh province in Pakistan to Iraq's holy city of Karbala to commemorate one of the biggest events in the Shia calendar. Read the full report here.

 

18 injured in explosion at Andhra Pradesh pharma company, NDTV

 

A reactor exploded in Andhra Pradesh's Anakapalle district, injuring over 18 people, NDTV reports. The explosion took place at the Achutapuram Special Economic Zone. The explosion occurred at the Escientia Company, a pharma firm's plant, in the Special Economic Zone. The injured have been shifted to the NTR Hospital for treatment, the report adds.
