Hindustan Times on AAP leader Satyendar Jain getting bail in money laundering case

A Delhi court on Friday granted bail to former Delhi minister Satyendar Jain in a money laundering case, Hindustan Times reports. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on May 30, 2022 on money laundering charge due to four companies allegedly linked to him. "Considering the delay in trial and long incarceration of 18 months, and the fact that trial will take long to start, let alone conclude, the accused is favourably suited for the relief," Special Judge Vishal Gogne was quoted as saying. Israel says war on Gaza to continue despite killing of Hamas’s Sinwar, Al Jazeera

 

Israel says its forces have killed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar in Gaza, Al Jazeera reports. There has been no comment from Hamas on Sinwar, the report adds, who succeeded Ismail Haniyeh after his assassination by Israel in July. Israel’s PM Benjamin Netanyahu says “this is not the end of the war in Gaza” despite killing of Sinwar. Lebanese group Hezbollah says it is entering a “new phase” in its fight against invading Israeli troops, adding that it has introduced new weapons over the past days. Read the full report here.

 

Haryana Congress leader quits party For treating him "shabbily": NDTV

Soon after the Haryana assembly elections, senior Congress leader and former minister Capt Ajay Singh Yadav on Thursday quit the party alleging shabby treatment after Sonia Gandhi left the post of party president. As per an NDTV report, he said he was quitting the party and also resigning as chairman of the All India Congress Committee's (AICC's) Other Backward Classes (OBC) department. Ajay Yadav (65) said he is disillusioned with the party high command "for treating me shabbily after Sonia Gandhi left the post of Congress President". Read the full report here.

 

Bill to grant mufti lawmaking powers stokes concern among Malaysia’s Muslims: The Straits Times

A Bill that grants the federal territories’ (FT) mufti the power to enshrine religious edicts into law has raised concerns among Malaysia’s Muslims, who fear it will infringe on their freedom of choice, The Straits Times reports. The Federal Territories Mufti Bill 2024 is intended to formalise the position of the mufti, or Islamic jurist, of the FT, which covers the capital Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan. The new law will prescribe the mufti’s qualifications, duties and scope of authority, the report adds. Read the full report here.

 

Supreme Court closes Isha Foundation case, India Today reports

 

India Today reports that the Supreme Court on Friday closed proceedings in a case of alleged illegal confinement against Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev’s Isha Foundation after statements from two women who said they were voluntarily living at the organisation's ashram without coercion. A bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud also pulled up the Madras High Court over its orders for a police investigation on a habeas corpus (produce the body) petition filed by the parents of the women. "These proceedings cannot be to malign people and malign institutions," the Chief Justice remarked during the hearing, as per the report. Read the full report here.
