Bengaluru engineering student raped on campus, Hindustan Times

A 22-year-old student was arrested for allegedly raping a senior at a private engineering college in Bengaluru, police said on Friday, Hindustan Times reports. The accused, identified as Jeevan Gowda, was taken into custody and remanded to judicial custody after the survivor filed a complaint at the Hanumanthanagar police station. The report says according to police officials that the assault took place on October 10 inside the college premises but was reported five days later, after the survivor -- a seventh-semester student -- informed her parents. MK Stalin announces commission to frame law against dishonour killings in Tamil Nadu, NDTV reports

 

In a significant move to curb caste- and community-based "dishonour killings", NDTV reports that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Friday announced the formation of a Commission headed by retired High Court Judge KM Basha to recommend measures for enacting an exclusive law to prevent such crimes. Making the announcement in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly, Stalin said the Commission will comprehensively study incidents of caste- and honour-related killings, consult victims' families, social activists, and legal experts, and draft recommendations for a new state law to eliminate the practice. Military leader Randrianirina sworn in as Madagascar’s new president, Al Jazeera reports

Madagascar has sworn in an army colonel as president, Al Jazeera reports, just days after a military takeover on the back of a popular rebellion that sent President Andry Rajoelina fleeing into exile. The African island nation’s High Constitutional Court on Friday formalised the appointment of Colonel Michael Randrianirina in a ceremony, crowning a tumultuous week in which Rajoelina was impeached for desertion of duty on Tuesday, with the military stepping in. Indian Express exclusive report: Centre approves Adani Power’s plan to link Godda plant to Indian grid

The Centre has granted approval to Adani Power Limited (APL), a large thermal power producer, to lay an overhead transmission line to connect its Godda Ultra Super Critical Thermal Power Plant with the Indian grid through a Line-In Line-Out (LILO) arrangement of the Kahalgaon A–Maithon B 400 KV line. Indian Express reports that as of now, the Godda plant supplies electricity exclusively to Bangladesh. For laying the proposed transmission line, which will pass through 56 villages of two tehsils — Godda and Poreyahat — in Godda district of Jharkhand, the Centre has conferred the same powers to the APL, which the telegraph authority possesses under the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885, for placing telegraph lines and posts. One dead, dozens injured as Peru’s new president faces widespread protests: The Straits Times

 

The Straits Times reports that at least one person was killed and dozens of police officers injured in widespread protests overnight in Peru against President Jose Jeri, who assumed power just days ago. The government will declare a state of emergency in Lima within hours and is preparing a package of measures to tackle rising insecurity, Prime Minister Ernesto Alvarez said late on Oct 16 in a press conference. The protest late on Wednesday, called by young Gen Z protesters, transport workers and civil groups, was the latest in a series of demonstrations against corruption and rising crime.
