IndiGo Delhi-Imphal flight returns mid-air after technical snag: Hindustan Times
An IndiGo flight from Delhi to Imphal returned to the capital shortly after take-off on Thursday due to a minor technical snag. Hindustan Times reports that the airline said that the aircraft landed safely and resumed its journey after necessary checks. Eviction drive aftermath turns violent in Assam, Indian Express
One person was killed and several, including police personnel, were injured on Thursday morning after police opened fire during violent clashes between protesters and the authorities at the site of a massive eviction drive that took place in Assam’s Goalpara district last week, Indian Express reports. An eviction drive to clear 140 hectares of forest land in the Paikan Reserve Forest in Goalpara district had been conducted on July 12, in which the homes of around 1,080 families had been bulldozed. 60 dead in Iraqi shopping centre fire, BBC reports
BBC reports that a fire that tore through a shopping centre in the Iraqi city of Kut has left at least 60 dead. The blaze at the mall, which had reportedly opened five days ago, broke out on Wednesday night and has since been brought under control. The report says that social media videos showed firefighters rescuing people from the mall's roof, but reports say many are still missing. Videos on INA's news channel show flames ripping through several floors of the Corniche Hypermarket in the city's centre, as firefighters try to douse them. Read the full report here.
Bangladesh denies demolition of Satyajit Ray's home, India Today
The Bangladesh interim government on Thursday dismissed news reports claiming that legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray's ancestral house in Mymensingh had been demolished, India Today reports, asserting that the building in question has no link to the iconic director's family. In an official statement, the government clarified that the disputed structure was built by local zamindar Shashikant Acharya Chowdhury. After the abolition of the zamindari system in the country, the property came under state control and was allocated to the Bangladesh Shishu Academy, the report adds. Read the full report here.
The Straits Times: Two dead, several injured in raid on Catholic church in Gaza
Two women were killed and several people were injured following a strike that hit the Catholic parish in the Gaza Strip, doctors at the Al-Ahli Hospital in Gaza City said as per The Straits Times. The strike damaged the Holy Family Church, the only Catholic Church inside the Palestinian enclave. The Vatican did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
