Supreme Court refuses to extend Congress leader Pawan Khera’s anticipatory bail: Hindustan Times

The Supreme Court on Friday refused to extend Congress leader Pawan Khera’s anticipatory bail in the case filed against him in Assam for levelling allegations against chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, that she held foreign passports. Hindustan Times reports that Khera filed an application against the court’s Wednesday order staying the April 10 Telangana high court verdict granting him a one-week transit anticipatory bail. He said that his pre-arrest bail plea is expected to be heard in the Gauhati high court on Monday, the report says. Read the full report here.

 

The Hindu: Delimitation Bill tabled in Lok Sabha, Opposition protests

 

As the Lok Sabha debates the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill and the Delimitation Bill today, The Hindu reports, Opposition parties have raised concerns that several States are set to lose their relative strength when the composition of the Lok Sabha is reapportioned among States according to 2011 Census figures. Israel and Lebanon ceasefire in effect as Trump says US 'very close' to deal with Iran, BBC reports

A 10-day ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon began, with celebrations and fireworks in Beirut, BBC reports. More than 2,000 people in Lebanon have been killed in the six-week conflict, with one in five people displaced; Israel said two of its civilians and 13 soldiers have been killed. Heatwave alert issued in many Indian states, NDTV reports

India is once again grappling with intense heatwave conditions, with temperatures crossing 40 degrees Celsius in several states as early as April, NDTV reports. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued multiple alerts, warning of prolonged heat exposure risks and urging precaution, particularly for vulnerable groups. While heat may seem like a seasonal inconvenience, the report says medical experts stress that extreme temperatures can have serious, even life-threatening consequences. Cities like Delhi often experience temperatures 3-7 degrees Celsius higher than surrounding areas due to the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect. Read the full report here.

 

Rohingya sea crossings hit record death toll in 2025: The Straits Times

 

Nearly 900 Rohingya refugees were reported missing or dead in the Andaman Sea and Bay of Bengal in 2025, The Straits Times reports, making it the deadliest year on record for the route, the United Nations refugee agency said on April 17. More than one in seven of the estimated 6,500 Rohingya refugees who attempted the sea crossing in 2025 were reported missing or dead, the highest mortality rate worldwide for refugee and migrant sea journeys, UNHCR spokesman Babar Baloch told reporters in Geneva. The dangerous sea crossings have continued into 2026, with more than 2,800 Rohingya embarking on such journeys up until April 13, 2026, Mr Baloch said. Read the full report here.
