NDTV on top court's relief for sacked Bengal teachers

Stressing that students must not suffer, the Supreme Court today said West Bengal teachers whose appointments were cancelled earlier this month due to irregularities in recruitment can continue to teach till the fresh selection process is completed. NDTV reports that this relief, however, is only for 'untainted' teachers -- those whose names were not linked to any irregularity during the investigation into the 2016 appointments. Also, the relief is for teachers of Class 9, 10, 11 and 12. The Supreme Court, however, set a deadline for the Bengal School Service Commission (SSC), the report adds. Read the full report here.

 

Heavy rain, thunderstorms in several parts of Himachal Pradesh, Hindustan Times

 

Heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and hailstorms lashed several parts of Himachal Pradesh, uprooting trees and disrupting power supply. Hindustan Times reports that the state capital Shimla remained without electricity for several hours. On Wednesday, Seobagh in Kullu district recorded the highest rainfall of 28.8 mm, followed by Lahaul-Spiti’s Kukumseri 23.8 mm and Narkanda 18 mm, the MeT office said on Thursday. Tesla whistleblower wins legal battle against Elon Musk, BBC reports

BBC reports that a Tesla whistleblower who has fought Elon Musk and his company through the courts for years has won the latest round of a long-running legal battle. Engineer Cristina Balan lost her job after she raised a safety concern in 2014 about a design flaw which could affect the cars' braking. The report says that her defamation claim against the firm seemed to have run out of road when a judge confirmed an arbitration decision dismissing her case. But a panel of appeal judges in California has reversed this decision in her favour. Read the full report here.

 

Indian Express: 22 Naxalites arrested, explosives seized in Chhattisgarh

Twenty two Naxalites have been arrested and explosive materials seized from them at three places in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district, Indian Express reports. Seven lower rung cadres were apprehended on Tuesday from a forest near Tekmetla village under Usoor police station area, when a joint team of the CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action- an elite unit of CRPF) and local police was out on an area domination operation, an official said. The report adds that six other Naxalites were arrested from forts in Belchar village under Jangla police station limits, while nine cadres were nabbed from a forest in Kandakarka village under Nelasnar police station area. Russia ramps up pressure on all fronts as Ukraine offers to buy US Patriots: Al Jazeera

 

Ukraine has reported dozens of civilian deaths from Russian attacks over the past week, Al Jazeera reports, including three killed in a late-night assault on Wednesday in the southeastern city of Dnipro. A child was among the victims of the drone attack, which came hours before high-stakes meetings in Paris due to take place later on Thursday, during which United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio and special envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff are to meet French President Emmanuel Macron and other European officials to discuss the conflict.
