Bengaluru-bound Akasa Air flight returns to Delhi after ‘security alert’, Indian Express
A Bengaluru-bound Akasa Air flight returned to the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi on Wednesday after a ‘security alert’, the airlines said. Indian Express reports that the Akasa Air flight QP 1335 was carrying 174 passengers, three infants and seven crew members. According to the statement by the airline, the captain of the flight followed all required emergency procedures for a safe landing in Delhi. Read the full report here.
City mayor among five killed in new Israeli strikes on southern Lebanon, BBC reports
Five people, including the local mayor, have been killed by Israeli air strikes on the southern Lebanese city of Nabatieh, BBC reports. A witness told the BBC there were nine strikes within 30 minutes - Israel says it struck "dozens" of Hezbollah targets in the area. The strikes came after Israel hit Beirut with air strikes for the first time in five days. On Tuesday, the US told Israel to boost aid access to Gaza or face losing some US military assistance, the report adds. Read the full report here.
Supreme Court pulls up Punjab, Haryana over farm fires: Hindustan Times
The Supreme Court on Wednesday pulled up Punjab and Haryana for tolerating farm fires by collecting nominal fines without initiating criminal prosecution against a single farmer under the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) in NCR & Adjoining Areas Act, 2021. Hindustan Times reports that a bench headed by justice Abhay S Oka also ordered penal action against officials of the two state governments for breaching the commission’s order and summoned the two chief secretaries to appear before it on October 23 and explain why no stringent action was taken either against the offending farmers or officials who failed to carry out the prosecution. The Straits Times: Sri Lanka arrests over 230 Chinese in cybercrime raids
The Straits Times reports that Sri Lankan police have arrested more than 230 Chinese men accused of targeting international banks in online scams, the foreign minister said, with help from security officials sent by Beijing. Vijitha Herath said police raids over the past week had also seized 250 computers and 500 mobile phones used in the alleged scams, with investigations into how much had been stolen still underway. “They have mainly targeted foreign banks and financial institutions,” he said of the gangs targeted in the raids, as per the report.
NDTV report: Abdullah Takes Oath, Congress Sits Out Of J&K Government
National Conference leader Omar Abdullah has been sworn in as the Chief Minister of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, NDTV reports, which got its first government since losing its special status. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha also administered oath to five other lawmakers from his party - Sakina Masood (Itoo), Javed Dar, Javed Rana, Surinder Choudhary and Satish Sharma. The Congress - which had allied with Mr Abdullah's party - has opted to sit out of the government, the report says. Sources told NDTV this morning it was offered one ministerial berth, which it declined and chose to extend support from outside. Read the full report here.
