Centre issues notification for Census in 2027, Indian Express
The Union Home Ministry on Monday issued a gazette notification, declaring that the Census will be carried out in 2027, Indian Express reports. The notification stated that the reference date for the Census will be March 1, 2027, except for the Union Territory of Ladakh, the snow-bound non-synchronous areas of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The last Census was held in 2011. The report adds that the 2027 Census will include the first nationwide caste enumeration since 1931. Read the full report here.
Iran launches more attacks on Israel, Al Jazeera reports
Iran launched a new wave of ballistic missile attacks on Israel – including Tel Aviv and Haifa – killing at least eight people hours after the Israeli military again bombed the Iranian capital, Tehran. Al Jazeera reports that the death toll from Israel’s attacks on Iran has risen to more than 220, including 70 women and children. The intelligence chief of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and two other generals were killed in Israeli attacks on Sunday. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz warned Tehran’s residents will “pay the price – and soon” for deadly Iranian retaliatory strikes, the report adds. Read the full report here.
Air India Dreamliner returns to Hong Kong after suspected mid-air snag: India Today
An Air India flight to Delhi returned to Hong Kong around an hour and a half after taking off on Monday morning, India Today reports. The flight returned due to the pilots suspecting a technical issue with the aircraft. The flight -- AI 315 -- was a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, a passenger jet that is in focus around the world following the crash of Air India flight 171 in Ahmedabad, the report adds. The Hong Kong-Delhi flight in question took off at around 9.30 am (IST) before circling back to the airport within 90 minutes, data from online tracker Fligthradar24 showed. The Straits Times: Los Angeles Mayor says curfew to continue for ‘couple more days’
A nightly curfew in Los Angeles will continue for “a couple more days”, Mayor Karen Bass said, the Straits Times reports, the ninth day of protests that have seen US President Donald Trump launch a military-backed crackdown. Demonstrators began protesting on June 6 against immigration raids launched by the Trump administration to round up undocumented migrants in the heavily Latino city in Democrat-led California. The rallies have been mostly peaceful and confined to a small area of Downtown Los Angeles, but marred by sporadic and eye-catching violence, the report said. Read the full report here.
Assam govt launches drive to clear alleged encroached land in Goalpara: Hindustan Times
The Assam government on Monday launched an eviction drive in Goalpara district to clear alleged encroachment by 667 families, mostly from the migrant Bengali-speaking community, officials said. Hindustan Times reports that the operation began at 7 am in Hasilabeel village under Balijana revenue circle amidst heavy security deployment. The eviction was carried out in 45 percent of 1,555 bighas, while the remaining area is a water body, the report adds as per an official. Read the full report here.
