Major admin reshuffle in Jammu and Kashmir ahead of likely poll announcement, NDTV
A major reshuffle is underway in Jammu and Kashmir Police ranks - new chiefs have been appointed to several districts and senior cops transferred - ahead of the Assembly election expected next month, NDTV reports. Also, J&K Police's Intelligence Wing will have a new chief. The districts of Jammu, Ramban, Kathua, Reasi, Udhampur, Doda and Poonch, as well as Shopian and Ganderbal in the Kashmir Valley, will get new police chiefs. Hindustan Times live report: Centre's order to protect health workers
The Centre has ordered the heads of institutions to file an FIR within a maximum of six hours in case of violence against any healthcare workers, Hindustan Times reports. Amid the ongoing probe over the rape and murder case of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College, the CBI has summoned four doctors on Friday. The report adds that massive protests have rocked the country over the gruesome crime in Kolkata, with doctors demanding a thorough probe into the incident and strict punishment for the accused persons. Paetongtarn Shinawatra becomes Thailand’s next PM, Al Jazeera reports
Paetongtarn Shinawatra has become Thailand’s youngest-ever prime minister after parliament confirmed her nomination by the ruling coalition of her Pheu Thai party, Al Jazeera reports. Paetongtarn succeeds Srettha Thavisin who was removed from his post by a constitutional court ruling on Wednesday. The report mentions that the 37-year-old, known by her nickname Ung Ing, is the youngest child of billionaire tycoon Thaksin Shinawatra and is the third member of the family after her father and aunt to hold the nation’s top job. Rumblings in Goa BJP as ministers play blame game over Bill fiasco: Indian Express
Days after the Pramod Sawant-led BJP government was forced to withdraw five Bills during the monsoon session of the Goa Assembly, several party ministers and leaders have continued to trade barbs, blaming each other over the episode. Indian Express reports that on the sidelines of an event held to commemorate the death anniversary of Goa’s first chief minister Dayanand Bandodkar Monday, BJP MLA and ex-minister Michael Lobo said the government’s decision to withdraw the Bills after introducing them during the recently-concluded 18-day Assembly session indicated that “all is not well”. “It is shocking that despite having a clear majority with 33 MLAs (including BJP’s 28 MLAs and remaining from its allies in the 40-member House), the Bills have been withdrawn," Lobo said. WHO warns more mpox cases to come in Europe after Sweden case, The Straits Times
The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Thursday warned that further imported cases of the new, more dangerous mpox strain in Europe were likely, The Straits Times reports, after Sweden announced the first such infection outside Africa in an outbreak that has killed hundreds in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The case recorded in a traveller in Sweden was announced the day after the WHO declared the mpox surge in Africa a public health emergency of international concern – the highest alarm it can sound. The UN health agency was concerned by the rise in cases and fatalities in the DRC and the spread to Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda, the report adds. Read the full report here.
