EC to deploy 2,407 companies of central armed forces for phase 1 polling in Bengal: Hindustan Times

The Election Commission will deploy 2,407 companies of central armed police forces for the first phase of the West Bengal assembly polls on April 23, with the highest number of personnel likely reserved for Murshidabad district, Hindustan Times reports. Elections to the 294-member West Bengal assembly will be held in two phases - on April 23 and April 29. Votes will be counted on May 4. Read the full report here.

 

Stalin calls urgent meeting of DMK district heads over delimitation: Indian Express

 

A day after issuing a sharply worded warning to the Union government, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Wednesday escalated his opposition to the proposed delimitation exercise, convening an urgent consultation with his party’s district secretaries even as the DMK called for statewide black flag protests on Thursday. Israel and Lebanon hold first direct talks since 1993, BBC reports

BBC reports that Lebanon and Israel have held their first diplomatic talks in over three decades, a rare encounter aimed at ending fighting between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah group. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who mediated, said it was a "historic opportunity" to end Hezbollah's influence. Bulldozer action on Maharashtra man accused of Sexually assaulting 180 minors, NDTV reports

A JCB rolled out outside the house of a Maharashtra man accused of assaulting 180 minors and took down illegal portions of the one-storey home. Mohammad Ayaz, alias Tanveer, a resident of Paratwada city in the Amravati district, is charged with sexual assault, sexual harassment and recording obscene videos, NDTV reports. In videos from the ground, a JCB is seen demolishing an iron staircase constructed outside the house to access the first floor. Al Jazeera on three years of Sudan under fire

 

Al Jazeera says that April 15 marks three years since the outbreak of war in Sudan. What began as a power struggle between the Sudanese Armed Forces, led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), commanded by Mohamed Hamdan “Hemedti” Dagalo, has forced more than 14 million people from their homes, creating one of the world’s largest humanitarian and displacement crises. According to Armed Conflict Location & Event Data (ACLED), an independent conflict monitor, over the past three years more than 50,000 people have been reported killed across the country, the report adds, though the true death toll is likely much higher once indirect deaths from disease, malnutrition and lack of healthcare are counted.
