100K applications for new voters rejected by EC, Hindustan Times reports

Over 100,000 Form-6 applications for registration of new voters were rejected following the publication of the draft electoral roll in Bihar, official data from the state’s chief electoral officer (CEO) shows, Hindustan Times reports. According to the data, 1,06,304 Form-6 applications were rejected after the draft roll was released on August 1 as part of the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) process in the poll-bound state. The report says that around 2.26 million applications were submitted during the claims and objections period that remained open until September 1, of which 2.15 million were accepted. Indian Express: Rahul Gandhi targets Haryana CM Saini over ‘justice’ for IPS officer Y Puran Kumar

 

Indian Express reports that Lok Sabha Leader of Oppostion Rahul Gandhi has blamed Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini for failing to deliver “justice” to the family of Haryana IPS officer Y Puran Kumar. A 2001-batch IPS officer and Additional Director General of Police, the report says that Kumar was found dead with a gunshot wound at his Chandigarh home on October 7. Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday met the family and said: “Haryana CM assured the family that justice would be done, but three days have passed with no action. Y Puran Kumar has two daughters who have lost their father and are under immense pressure…” Read the full report here.

 

Early season storm sends a deluge of rain to California: The Straits Times

An early season storm lashed northern California with drenching rain on Tuesday and was moving through the evening towards southern California, where officials in Los Angeles county issued evacuation warnings in some areas. The Straits Times reports that thunderstorms could unleash heavy rain that sends torrents of water, mud, sand, rocks, trees and boulders down steep slopes in places recently burned by wildfires, forecasters warned. Evacuation warnings mean that hazardous conditions are possible and that people should keep an eye out for evacuation orders calling for immediate action, the report says. Major road collapse in Madhya Pradesh leaves 30-foot-deep crater

A major portion of a road near a village in Madhya Pradesh collapsed on Monday afternoon, resulting in a 30-foot-deep crater, NDTV reports. The incident occurred between 12 noon and 1 pm, near the bridge from Mandideep to Intkhedi, when nearly 100 meters of the road caved in. The report adds that fortunately, no vehicles were passing at the time and no injuries were reported. A video showing the retaining wall crumbling went viral on social media, raising concerns about the condition of the bridge constructed over a decade ago, and the quality of state highway construction. Released Palestinians in Gaza allege hunger, abuse in Israeli jails, Al Jazeera reports

 

US President Donald Trump has promised lasting peace in the Middle East after signing a Gaza ceasefire deal with the leaders of Qatar, Egypt and Türkiye, Al Jazeera reports. Palestinians released from Israeli detention say they were beaten and humiliated, with one former detainee describing Israel’s Ofer Prison as a “slaughterhouse”. Israel released nearly 2,000 prisoners and detainees as part of a captives and prisoner exchange. The report says that some 154 prisoners were exiled to Egypt. Hamas has also released all 20 surviving Israeli captives held in Gaza and handed over the bodies of four others. Read the full report here.
