Baba Siddique's son, MLA Zeeshan Siddique, also on hit-list, NDTV reports

NDTV reports as per police sources that after veteran politician Baba Siddiqui was shot dead in Mumbai last week, sources claim his MLA-son Zeeshan Siddiqui is also on the Bishnoi gang's hit-list. The shooters told the cops they were given a contract to kill both Baba Siddique and Zeeshan. The shooters, they said, were told both the father and the son would be present at the murder spot on Saturday evening. But if they did not get a chance to attack them together, the shooters were ordered to kill whoever they could find first, the report added. Read the full report here.

 

Shinde govt waives Mumbai entry toll for light vehicles, Indian Express

 

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced on Monday that the Mumbai entry toll for light vehicles will be waived at all five toll plazas at the city’s entrances, Indian Express reports, effective from 12 am on Tuesday. This decision comes just days before the Maharashtra Assembly elections and aligns with the state government’s recent trend of introducing voter-friendly initiatives, the report says. The five toll plazas where this waiver will apply are located at Vashi, Airoli, Mulund (LBS Road), Mulund (Eastern Express Highway), and Dahisar. Th report says that earlier this year, the toll for light vehicles was raised to Rs 45, as part of a scheduled increase every three years. Read the full report here.

 

The Straits Times on the collapse of Iceland govt

Iceland’s three-party coalition government collapsed on Sunday over disagreements on policy issues, Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson said, The Straits Times reports. New elections will be held in November. Benediktsson, head of the conservative Independence Party, told reporters that tensions had mounted within the left-right coalition on issues ranging from foreign policy to asylum seekers and energy. The report mentions that the coalition had been made up of the Independence Party, the Left-Green Movement and the centre-right Progressive Party. Read the full report here.

 

SC rejects plea for 24-hour Sindhi language channel on Doordarshan: Hindustan Times

The Supreme Court on Monday refused to entertain a plea by a non-profit for issuing directives to the Union government to establish a 24-hour Sindhi language channel on Doordarshan to sustain and even revive the Sindhi culture and language. Hindustan Times reports that The bench, including justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, affirmed the Delhi high court’s May 27 order that a judicial mandate for a dedicated Sindhi channel was not tenable. It mentioned there were other languages like Dogri, Santali, Bodo, and Sanskrit that are, like Sindhi, included in the 8th schedule of the Constitution, but have no dedicated government-run television channel. Israeli shelling of Gaza school kills at least 15, BBC reports

 

BBC reports that an Israeli attack on a school used to shelter displaced Palestinians has killed at least 15 people in central Gaza. Gaza's Hamas-run Civil Defence Agency said the site in Nuseirat camp was struck by a volley of artillery on Sunday, killing entire families and wounding dozens more. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said it was looking into the reports. Earlier, five children were reportedly killed by a drone strike while playing on a street corner in northern Gaza, the report adds. Read the full report here.
