Top consumer watchdog launches probe into Ola Electric, Indian Express
The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA), the country’s top consumer watchdog, has ordered a detailed investigation into complaints related to “deficiencies” in service and products by Ola Electric, Indian Express reports. The CCPA headed by Nidhi Khare has asked the director general (DG) of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) to investigate the matter. An order to this effect was issued on November 6, the report said, adding that the BIS DG has been asked to submit the investigation report within 15 days. Read the full report here.
Delhi engulfed in toxic smog, Hindustan Times reports
A dense layer of toxic smog covered Delhi and several cities surrounding the National Capital Region on Thursday, Hindustan Times reports, disrupting flight operations and train schedules. Several residents have complained of cough and breathing issues even as hospitals continue to see a steady rise in patients reporting air pollution-related health issues. Al Jazeera: Highest alert level raised as Philippines braces for Super Typhoon Usagi
The Philippines has raised its highest storm alert and evacuated thousands of people as it braces for Super Typhoon Usagi, the fifth storm to hit the country in three weeks. Al Jazeera reports that Usagi is set to make landfall in the already storm-battered northern part of the main island of Luzon on Thursday, packing sustained winds of up to 185km/h (115mph). President Ferdinand Marcos Jr on Thursday urged residents in the affected areas to “heed the warning” of local governments. Read the full report here.
High drama as cops arrest Rajasthan candidate who slapped official, NDTV reports
Naresh Meena - the independent candidate in Wednesday's by-poll for Rajasthan's Deoli-Uniara Assembly seat, who slapped an election official on camera during voting - was arrested Thursday amid high drama. NDTV reports that he was arrested after a "strategic" operation by a large police team, which included senior officers and cops in full riot gear. Minutes before he was cornered and taken into custody Meena declared to reporters "I will not surrender", and called on his followers to "surround the police... jam traffic". Republicans complete power takeover with US House majority: The Straits Times
The Republican Party has won a majority in the US House of Representatives, media projected on Wednesday, completing their clean sweep of Congress. The Straits Times reports that this will hand President-elect Donald Trump vast legislative power. After more than a week of vote counting, CNN and NBC projected that the Republicans had reached the 218 seats needed to retain their majority in the 435-seat Lower Chamber, having already secured control over the Senate.
