India Today: Gavai to be CJI for 6 months, first woman CJI might serve just 36 days

Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, who was sworn in on Wednesday as the 52nd Chief Justice of India, will serve as the CJI till November 23, India Today reports. If Gavai's six-month tenure looks short, one needs to consider that the probable first woman CJI would have a term of just 36 days, the report adds. It has been 75 years since the Supreme Court of India was established and yet, no woman has been appointed as the CJI, the report says. Read the full report here.

 

BSF jawan detained by Pakistan on April 23 handed over to India, Indian Express

 

Nearly three weeks after he was detained by the Pakistan Rangers after he accidentally crossed the international border in Punjab’s Ferozepur district, Border Security Force (BSF) jawan Poornam Kumar Shaw was handed over to India at around 10.30 am on Wednesday. Indian Express reports that Shaw had been in the custody of the Pakistan Rangers since April 23. Shaw was brought back to India through the Joint Check Post at Attari in Amritsar. Shaw was in Pakistan’s custody for 21 days, the report says. Read the full report here.

 

Trump meets interim Syrian president, BBC reports

US President Donald Trump has met the Syrian interim president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, in Saudi Arabia this morning, BBC reports. The brief meeting came after the US lifted sanctions on Syria. Trump said the move is designed to "give them a chance at greatness". The report also says that there were spontaneous and joyous public celebrations in the streets of the capital Damascus yesterday, after Trump said that US sanctions on Syria will be lifted. NDTV on Cyclone Shakti likely to form over Bay of Bengal

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on Tuesday that a cyclone named "Shakti" may be building in the Bay of Bengal, NDTV reports. According to the weather office, the southwest monsoon has officially begun, marking its arrival in parts of the south Andaman Sea, Nicobar Islands, south Bay of Bengal and some parts of the north Andaman Sea. As per the report, the IMD noted the presence of an upper air cyclonic circulation over the Andaman Sea, which may lead to the formation of a low-pressure system between May 16 and 22. Israel kills 65 in Gaza, Al Jazeera reports

 

Israeli forces have intensified attacks on Gaza, killing at least 65 Palestinians since midnight, Al Jazeera reports as per medics. Victims include 45 people who were killed in north Gaza. Russia, China and the UK have rejected a US-Israeli plan for distributing aid in Gaza, instead urging Israel to lift its two-month blockade on Gaza. According to the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, 75 percent of households in Gaza say that “amid deteriorating sanitation conditions”, they have less water access now than a month ago.
