Mint's live updates on Cyclone Biparjoy
Cyclone Biparjoy is expected to land on Gujarat's Saurashtra and Kutch regions and adjoining Pakistan coasts on June 15. Mint's live updates state that parts of the Saurashtra-Kutch region received heavy rains accompanied by strong winds. It further said Indian Coast Guard has succeeded in evacuating 50 personnel from an oil rig located 40 km off the coast of Gujarat. According to the Western Railway, a total of 69 trains have been cancelled, 33 trains short-terminated and 27 trains short-originated as a precautionary measure. Read the full report here.
At least 11 killed in late night attack in Manipur's Khamenlok, The Hindu
At least eleven villagers were massacred in a late night attack at Khamenlok in Imphal East district of violence-hit Manipur on Tuesday, The Hindu reported. Several injured persons have been admitted in government and private hospitals. The report adds, as per hospital sources, that the death toll will increase since many wounded persons are admitted in the ICUs.The dead bodies have been kept in the mortuary of JN Institute of Medical Sciences, Porompat in Imphal. Police said that the militants hurled several bombs at Khamenlok late on Tuesday night killing and injuring several villagers. Read the full report here.
New Zealand says new Nato partnership to cover climate change, security: The Straits Times
New Zealand is negotiating a new type of partnership with Nato. The Straits Times reports that it will likely cover areas of common interest including the international rules based order, climate change and cyber security, as per the country’s foreign minister. New Zealand has been a Nato partner since 2012, but is not a member. A Nato statement in February said New Zealand and Nato were strengthening relations to address shared security challenges. BBC: Trump defiant after pleading not guilty in classified documents case
Donald Trump has pleaded not guilty to historic charges of mishandling sensitive files at a federal court in Miami, Florida, BBC reports. He is the first US president - current or former - to be hit with a federal criminal indictment. The report described him as with his arms crossed, in a dark suit and red tie, as he sat in stone-faced silence for his second court appearance this year. The Republican later travelled to his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, where he addressed supporters. Read the full report here.
Tamil Nadu Minister's arrest triggers row, NDTV reports
NDTV reports that Tamil Nadu Minister and DMK leader V Senthil Balaji went through a coronary angiogram today, hours after he was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in an alleged money laundering case. The ED on Tuesday raided Balaji's home before taking him away for questioning. The minister was arrested this morning after hours of questioning. The report says that he broke down in tears when he was being taken to the hospital for a medical checkup by the ED in the morning. The hospital in Chennai where Balaji is being treated added that the procedure revealed a triple vessel disease which requires a CABG-bypass surgery "at the earliest". The report also adds that his wife has moved the Madras High Court against his arrest. Read the full report here.
