Hindustan Times on Doda encounter: Indian Army captain killed, 4 terrorists believed to be gunned down
A captain of the Indian Army from the 48 Rashtriya Rifles was killed and four terrorists were believed to be gunned down during an ongoing encounter in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district on Wednesday, Hindustan Times reports. The White Knight Corps condoled the demise of Captain Deepak Singh and said that it stands firm with the bereaved family in the hour of grief. Indian Express on Assam medical college withdrawing advisory asking women to ‘not attract unnecessary attention’
Assam-based Silchar Medical College and Hospital (SMCH’s) Wednesday withdrew the advisory asking women to “be composed emotionally” while on duty and to avoid “unnecessary attention of unscrupulous people” after it was widely criticised, Indian Express reports. The institute’s Junior Doctors Association had termed the advisory “outrageous”. The report adds that the notice was issued in the wake of the rape and murder of a junior woman doctor at a Kolkata hospital. Read the full report here.
Court dismisses Thai PM Srettha over Cabinet appointment: The Straits Times
Thailand’s Constitutional Court on Wednesday dismissed Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin for appointing to his Cabinet a former lawyer who served jail time, The Straits Times reports, raising the spectre of more political upheaval and a reset of the governing alliance. Real estate tycoon Srettha becomes the fourth Thai premier in 16 years to be removed by verdicts by the same court, after it ruled that he violated the Constitution by appointing a minister who did not meet ethical standards. Supreme Court denies interim bail to Arvind Kejriwal in CBI arrest case: India Today
The Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected interim bail for Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in a corruption case filed by the CBI, India Today reports, stemming from the alleged excise policy scam case. A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan issued a notice to the CBI in the plea, where he challenged his arrest and sought bail. The court scheduled the matter for hearing on August 23, stating "no interim bail for now". Read the full report here.
Second Russian region declares state of emergency after Ukraine attack, BBC reports
BBC reports that a state of emergency has been declared in the Russian border region of Belgorod following attacks by Ukrainian forces. Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said the situation was "extremely difficult" due to daily shelling in the region. "Houses are destroyed, civilians died and were injured," he said. The report mentions that it follows Ukraine's surprise cross-border attack in Russia's Kursk region last week, leading to mass evacuations and a state of emergency being declared there by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
