Mumbai water tankers' strike called off after meeting with civic body chief, NDTV reports
The water tanker association in Mumbai called off their four-day strike after a meeting with the city's civic body chief, NDTV reports. The association began its "indefinite break" from supplying water after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) issued notices to owners of private wells that supply water to the tankers. The report says that the Municipal Commissioner of BMC, Bhusan Gagrani, has assured the associations that the notices will be revoked until the issue is dealt with by the Central Ground Water Authority. Indian Express Case Explained: Mehul Choksi's appeal against arrest in Belgium
The legal representative of fugitive diamond trader Mehul Choksi, booked in the Punjab National Bank (PNB) fraud case, said Monday they are in the process of filing an appeal against his arrest in Belgium. Indian Express reports that Choksi was arrested in the European nation on Saturday after India made an extradition request. “Our appeal seeking his release on bail will mainly be on the ground that (due to) his medical condition, he is undergoing treatment for cancer," Choksi’s lawyer Vijay Aggarwal told The Indian Express on Monday morning. He added that the case can come up for hearing only after five days, which is when they will be filing the appeal for bail. Read the full report here.
Trump threatens new tariffs on smartphones days after exempting them, BBC
US President Donald Trump says Chinese-made smartphones and other electronics will not be exempt from tariffs, BBC reports, adding they are simply moving into a different levy "bucket". European stock markets bounced up on Monday morning after Friday's official announcement that some of these products would escape levies of up to 145 percent. China has called on Donald Trump to "completely cancel" his tariffs regime, and "return to the right path of mutual respect". However, the report says, US officials said on Sunday that products would be subject to a "semiconductor tariff" instead, with Trump expected to reveal more details later. Read the full report here.
15 foreign nationals held in India for illegal stay, set for deportation: Hindustan Times
Hindustan Times reports that 15 foreign nationals, including two Bangladeshis, have been sent for deportation after being nabbed by the Delhi Police for staying in India without valid visas. Besides the Bangladeshis, 12 Nigerians and one from Ivory Coast were apprehended during an operation carried out in the Mohan Garden and Uttam Nagar areas. Police said they were found overstaying in India without valid visas and were subsequently sent to a detention centre, the report says. Read the full report here.
Al Jazeera live updates: Israel intensifies land, air attacks on Gaza
Israel intensified its land and air attacks on Gaza, Al Jazeera reports, with artillery and air raids hitting several areas of Khan Younis in the south. The WHO says a Palestinian child has died due to disruption of medical care after Israeli forces bombed the al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza City, as global condemnation grows over the assault. Gaza’s Health Ministry says at least 50,944 Palestinians are confirmed dead and 116,156 wounded in Israel’s war on Gaza, the report adds. Read the full report here.
