Hindustan Times: Nipah virus in Kerala is Bangladesh variant

The Kerala government said in the assembly on Wednesday that the brain-damaging Nipah virus was a strain of the Bangladesh variant that spreads from human to human, Hindustan Times reports. It has killed two people out of four infected. Kerala Health Minister Veena George said that the variant has a high mortality rate but was less infectious, it adds. George confirmed that the recent “unnatural deaths” in state's Kozhikode district were a result of the virus. Read the full report here.

 

Truck runs over 11 people waiting on Rajasthan highway, NDTV

 

At least 11 people were killed and 12 others were injured as a truck rammed into a bus on National Highway stretch in Rajasthan's Bharatpur, NDTV reports. The bus was travelling from Rajasthan's Pushkar to Vrindavan in Uttar Pradesh when the accident occurred around 4.30 am, as per the police. The report says that the incident occurred when the bus had broken down on a bridge. The bus driver and some passengers were standing behind the bus when the speeding truck rammed into the vehicle, NDTV mentions as per a survivor's account. Read the full report here.

 

Residents trapped in deadly Hanoi apartment blaze, BBC reports

At least eight people are known to have died and dozens injured in a huge fire that broke out in a high-rise apartment block in Vietnam's capital Hanoi. BBC reports as per the State media that around 70 people had been rescued from the nine-storey building, with many taken to hospital. The fire, which broke out during the night, has been extinguished but rescue operations are continuing. The report mentions that authorities in fast-growing Hanoi say many newly-built apartments do not meet fire safety regulations. Read the full report here.

 

The Hindu on FIR against Udhayanidhi Stalin in Mumbai

The Hindu reports that a First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader and Tamil Nadu Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin who is also the son of CM Stalin, over his objectional remarks on 'Sanatana Dharma'. Mumbai’s Mira Road police have registered the case under sections 153 A and 295 A of IPC, the report adds. A BJP delegation in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday handed over a memorandum to the State police demanding registration of an FIR against Udhayanidhi Stalin for his remarks against 'Sanatana Dharma'. Al Jazeera's Libya floods live: Thousands missing, dead, displaced in Derna

 

The death toll in the devastated Mediterranean city of Derna is 5,200, Al Jazeera reports as per the eastern Ministry of Interior. The figure is expected to rise as recovery operations continue in Libya’s devastated eastern city. Rescuers and aid convoys are struggling to get to Derna, the report mentions, which has only one functional road left leading into it. More than 1,000 bodies have been collected. The United Nations says tens of thousands have been internally displaced in eastern Libya. Read the full report here.
