CM Eknath Shinde's bag checked by EC officials in Palghar, Hindustan Times

Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde's bags were checked by officials of the Election Commission of India in Palghar on Wednesday. Hindustan Times reports that Shinde's bags were checked after his helicopter landed at the Palghar Police ground helipad. A massive political row began when Uddhav Thackeray's bags were checked twice in Yavatmal district Monday and Latur on Tuesday while the former Chief Minister is on a campaign trail. Indian Express: SC slams demolition of properties of accused, issues directives

 

Indian Express reports that the Supreme Court on Wednesday held that demolishing the properties of citizens without following due process for the sole reason that they may be involved in some crime is contrary to the rule of law. It directed that officials indulging in such “high-handed actions” be made accountable. The court also issued certain directions that have to be complied with before properties are demolished, the report adds. Read the full report here.

 

UN calls for end of weapons supplies to Sudan’s warring parties, Al Jazeera

The United Nations has said continued weapons supplies to Sudan’s warring military and paramilitary forces are “enabling the slaughter” and must stop, with civilians bearing the brunt of the conflict. Al Jazeera reports that both the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) are escalating their military operations and recruiting new fighters fuelled by “considerable” external support and a steady flow of arms, said Rosemary DiCarlo, the UN undersecretary-general for political and peacebuilding affairs. Sudan plunged into civil war on April 15, 2023, as a result of a power struggle between the RSF led by Mohamed Hamdan “Hemedti” Dagalo and SAF chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan. India Today on how Agra managed to 'improve' air quality data, but not air pollution

Agra’s Municipal Corporation is under scrutiny following revelations of actions that potentially manipulated air quality data, India Today reports. A viral video circulating on social media shows water sprinklers installed on the roof of the Municipal Corporation building, directly targeting the city's primary automatic air quality monitoring station. While this setup reportedly reduced the Air Quality Index (AQI) readings, it did not necessarily lower the actual air pollution in the area. Read the full report here.

 

Donald Trump appoints Elon Musk to 'efficiency' role and Fox News host as defence secretary, BBC

 

US President-elect Donald Trump has appointed Elon Musk to jointly lead a new "Department of Government Efficiency", BBC reports. Musk will lead the body with Republican Vivek Ramaswamy - it's essentially an advisory role, the report says. Trump says the body will "dismantle government bureaucracy" and could be the "Manhattan Project of our time" - a reference to the top-secret effort to develop nuclear weapons during World War Two. Trump has also picked Pete Hegseth, a Fox News host and Army veteran, to be defence secretary, the report adds. Read the full report here.
