BBC's live report on Russia-Ukraine War: Zelensky says 'war is coming home'
Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky says "Russia has brought war to others, and now it is coming home", BBC reports. He says the offensive operations in Russia's Kursk region can help bring peace closer, by putting pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Ukrainian military says its troops now hold 1000 sq km of Russian territory, although the Institute for the Study of War puts the figure at around 800 sq km. Putin accused Ukraine of "committing crimes" against Russian people and said Kyiv would receive what he called a "worthy response", the report adds. Read the full report here.
Indian Express: Calcutta HC orders CBI probe into Kolkata doctor rape-murder case
Calcutta HC has ordered CBI probe in the case of the alleged rape and murder of a 31-year-old junior doctor who was found dead in a seminar hall at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on Friday. Indian Express reports that Calcutta HC has also directed police to hand over all documents related to woman doctor murder case to CBI by 10 am on Wednesday. The court urged agitating doctors to call off ceasework, says they have a ‘pious obligation’, the report adds. The National Human Rights Commission, India has taken suo motu cognizance of the reported death in the mysterious circumstances. Read the full report here.
Rajasthan man ties wife to motorcycle, drags her around village in Nagaur, Hindustan Times
A man was arrested in Rajasthan after he tied his wife to a motorcycle and dragged her across the village, the police said on Tuesday, Hindustan Times reports. The incident reportedly took place a month ago in Nagaur district of Rajasthan. A video of the incident surfaced on social media which showed the woman tied to the motorcycle and being dragged behind it, which led to her husband's arrest, the report adds. The woman was reportedly thrashed by the man, who was under the influence of alcohol, before she was tied to the vehicle. Read the full report here.
Iran dismisses European restraint calls as contradicting international law, Al Jazeera
Al Jazeera reports that Iran has dismissed calls by France, Germany and the United Kingdom to stand down its threat against Israel after the assassination of Hamas’s political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran last month. Nasser Kanaani, the spokesman of Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said in a statement on Tuesday that the request “lacks political logic and contradict principles of international law” and also “constitutes public and practical support” for Israel. The European countries “raised no objection to the international crimes” of Israel, the report adds, and “impudently asked Iran not to respond to a violation of its sovereignty and territorial integrity”, he said. A consulting firm set up by Madhabi Buch before she became a member and chairperson of the Securities and Exchange Board of India is registered at the same address as its statutory auditor, regulatory filings by the firm show. Scroll.in reports that such arrangements raise “questions about conflict of interest between the firm and the auditor, and about the independence of the auditor”, said Amarjeet Chopra, a former president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. The firm, Agora Advisory Private Limited, has come under scrutiny after a report by Hindenburg Research on August 10 highlighted it as part of possible conflicts of interest on the part of Buch.
