Hindustan Times: COP29 Presidency announces adoption of standards for carbon credits, draws flak

The Azerbaijan Presidency of the 2024 UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) announced an early victory with the adoption of standards for the creation of carbon credits under Article 6.4 of the Paris Agreement, drawing criticism, Hindustan Times reports. The early adoption of the related modalities and most importantly carbon removal technologies was done without a discussion by parties. Read the full report here.

 

NDTV reports, retail inflation rises to 6.21% in October

 

Retail inflation rose to 6.21 percent in October from 5.49 percent in the preceding month mainly due to higher food prices, breaching the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI's) upper tolerance level, NDTV reports according to government data released today. The consumer price index-based inflation was 4.87 percent in October 2023. The National Statistics Office data showed that inflation in the food basket rose to 10.87 percent in October from 9.24 per cent in September and 6.61 percent in the year-ago month. Trump to name national security adviser, BBC reports

President-elect Donald Trump is expected to name Rep Michael Waltz, a Florida Republican, to serve as national security adviser, BBC reports. A veteran of the war in Afghanistan and a long-time Trump supporter, Waltz was re-elected to Congress last week - though he will have to vacate his office to serve in the White House, the report adds. Waltz would serve as a key White House adviser on national security and foreign policy matters. Senator Marco Rubio of Florida is in talks to be Trump's nominee for secretary of state, the report further says. Read the full report here.

 

IAS officer caught in ‘Hindu-Muslim’ WhatsApp group row suspended in Kerala: Indian Express

The Kerala government on Monday suspended two IAS officers, Kerala Industries and Commerce Director K Gopalakrishnan and Agriculture Department Special Secretary N Prasanth, who have been at the centre of two recent controversies. Indian Express reports that Gopalakrishnan, a 2013-batch officer, has been embroiled in a controversy this month following the formation of a WhatsApp group called “Mallu Hindu Officers”. The report also says that Prasanth, a 2007-batch officer, caused a stir over the last three days after taking to social media and making multiple posts against another IAS officer, Additional Chief Secretary A Jayathilak. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan took the decision to suspend the two based on reports from Chief Secretary Sarada Muraleedharan. Read the full report here.

 

Al Jazeera on unrest in Amsterdam as further arrests made over Maccabi clashes

 

Al Jazeera reports that unrest continued overnight in Amsterdam as the Dutch police said they had made more arrests in connection with last week’s clashes involving Israeli football fans and pro-Palestinians. Amsterdam’s city council is due to discuss the events, which authorities have branded “anti-Semitic”, on Tuesday. However, many reports have noted violence and provocation on the part of the visiting Israeli fans. The five people arrested were men aged between 18 and 37. Earlier, more than 60 people were arrested in connection with the violence that left five injured. Read the full report here.
