The Hindu on Parliament Winter Session Day 14: LS debates Disaster Management (Amendment) Bill

The Hindu reports that the Opposition’s no-confidence notice against Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar led to disruptions at the Upper House today too. This comes after yesterday the Rajya Sabha saw no business and was washed out after clashes between the government and the Opposition over the notice. The updates also talk about the Lok Sabha continuing discussion about the Disaster Management (Amendment) Bill, 2024. Union Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal is slated to introduce The Readjustment of Representation of Scheduled Tribes in Assembly Constituencies of the State of Goa Bill, 2024. Indian Express reports on One nation, one election bill getting Cabinet nod

 

The Union cabinet gave its approval to two bills on Thursday, one of which is a nod to the “one nation, one election” plan of the BJP-led Central government, reports Indian Express. According to the report, the “one nation, one election” bill is likely to be tabled during the ongoing Winter Session of Parliament following which it may be forwarded to a joint parliamentary committee. Since coming to power in 2014, PM Narendra Modi has been advocating for the plan to hold elections to Lok Sabha, all state Legislative Assemblies, and urban and rural local bodies (municipalities and panchayats) at the same time. A high-level committee, headed by former president Ram Nath Kovind, in March this year recommended simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state assemblies as the first step, report highlights. Devendra Fadnavis meets PM Modi amid deadlock over Maharashtra cabinet, The Hindustan Times

A report by Hindustan times suggests that days after Devendra Fadnavis took oath as the Chief Minister, he met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Thursday. Nearly three weeks since winning a majority in the Maharashtra assembly elections, the Mahayuti alliance is yet to divide the cabinet portfolios among the three alliance partners - BJP, Shiv Sena and NCP. The report says that this meeting comes after the three parties requested the intervention of central BJP leaders to address remaining contentious issues. The report states that on Wednesday night, Fadnavis and his deputy Ajit Pawar held a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP chief JP Nadda, but an upset Eknath Shinde chose not to join the trip. South Korean President Yoon vows to 'fight to the end' defying impeachment threat : Reuters

Reuters reports that South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol said on Thursday he would "fight to the end" as his own political party shifted closer to voting with the opposition to impeach him over his short-lived martial law order. As per the report, in his lengthy televised address, he alleged that North Korea had hacked South Korea's election commission, casting doubt on his party's landslide election defeat in April. The report suggests that Yoon, whose country has Asia's fourth-largest economy, hopes political allies will rally to support him but this appeared less likely after his address. BBC : Syria rebel leader vows to shut down notorious Assad prisons

 

A report by BBC claims that the syrian rebel forces have said they plan to close the notoriously harsh prisons run by ousted president Bashar al-Assad and hunt those involved in the killing or torture of detainees. Rebel leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, also known as Abu Mohammed al-Jolani, also said he would dissolve the security forces of the former regime, in a statement. The report further states that there are videos showing thousands of prisoners being freed from Saydnaya prison surfaced after the collapse of the Assad government on Sunday. This prison is referred to as a "human slaughterhouse" by rights groups. Almost 60,000 people were tortured and killed in the prisons run by Assad. Read the full report here.
