Goa nightclub owners detained in Thailand, The Hindu reports

The Thailand Police have detained Saurabh Luthra and his brother Gaurav Luthra, who fled India after a fire at their Goa nightclub claimed 25 lives, The Hindu reports. The nightclub co-owners, against whom an Interpol Blue Corner Notice had been issued, were detained at the request of the Indian government, the officials said. Both the accused have been detained at Phuket in Thailand, and a process is underway to bring them to India. Read the full report here.

 

Indian Express live updates on IndiGo Flight status today

 

IndiGo airline, which is battling staff shortage, ticket cancellations and refunds, and government action, will submit a “full report” on the flight disruptions today, Indian Express reports. CEO Pieter Elbers has been asked to appear before the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Thursday, December 11, at 3 pm. Senior officials from all relevant departments have also been asked to attend the meeting, the report adds. Read the full report here.

 

US seizes oil tanker off Venezuela, BBC reports

US forces have seized an oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela, US President Donald Trump said, BBC reports, marking a sharp escalation in Washington's pressure campaign against Nicolás Maduro's government. Releasing a video of the seizure, Attorney General Pam Bondi described the vessel as a "crude oil tanker used to transport sanctioned oil from Venezuela and Iran". Caracas swiftly denounced the action, the report adds, calling it an act of "international piracy". Earlier, President Maduro declared that Venezuela would never become an "oil colony". 3 held for assault on hawker selling chicken patties at Gita recital event in Kolkata: Hindustan Times

Hindustan Times reports that three people were arrested on Thursday in connection with one of the two criminal cases registered after two Muslim hawkers were assaulted back-to-back for selling chicken patties on Sunday near the venue of the mass recital of Bhagavad Gita verses at Brigade Parade Grounds in Kolkata. Sheikh Riyazul, a patties seller from Hooghly district’s Arambagh, who like every day had travelled to Kolkata by train to sell chicken and vegetable patties, was assaulted on Sunday by a group of around a dozen men. South Sudan army to secure critical Heglig oilfield in Sudan war spillover, Al Jazeera

 

South Sudan’s military has moved into the Heglig oilfield under an unprecedented agreement between the country and neighbouring Sudan’s warring parties to safeguard critical energy infrastructure from the country’s civil war. Al Jazeera reports that the deployment on Wednesday came after the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) captured the strategic site on December 8, compelling the government-aligned Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) units to retreat across the border into South Sudan, where they reportedly surrendered their weapons.
