NDTV on Tahawwur Rana getting 18-day NIA custody

NDTV reports that 26/11 Mumbai terror attack accused Tahawwur Hussain Rana was extradited to India from the US on Thursday evening. ana has been kept in a 14x14 cell, equipped with CCTV cameras, a bed and toilet, on the ground floor of the NIA headquarters, the report says as per the sources. Multiple layers of digital security has been placed, as well as a retinue of 24-hour guards. Only 12 NIA officials are allowed to enter this cell, the report adds. Read the full report here.

 

BBC: Xi calls on EU to join Beijing in standing up to Trump's tariff 'bullying'

 

China's President Xi Jinping has called on the EU to join Beijing in opposing "bullying" from the US on tariffs, BBC reports. "There are no winners in a tariff war," he said. China faces a 145 percent levy on some of its goods imported to the US, the report mentions. Beijing had earlier on Thursday announced an 84 percent tariff on US goods. Hindustan Times: Nearly 50 killed in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh as lightning strikes, hailstorms

At least 47 people were killed in lightning strikes and rain-related incidents across Bihar and Uttar Pradesh on Thursday, Hindustan Times reports. In Bihar, at least 25 people were killed in lightning strikes and hailstorms in several districts. In neighbouring Uttar Pradesh, at least 22 people were killed across 15 districts of the state after rainfall accompanied by hailstorms and lightning lashed several parts of the state, the report adds. Zelensky accuses Russia of systematically recruiting Chinese fighters, The Straits Times

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Russia of working systematically in China to recruit fighters for its war in Ukraine, The Straits Times reports. It adds that this comes days after announcing Ukrainian forces had captured two Chinese men fighting for Moscow. China had warned Ukraine on Thursday against making “irresponsible” remarks after Zelensky said Ukrainian intelligence had revealed at least 155 Chinese citizens were fighting for Russia. Thousands of sacked Bengal teachers hit streets: India Today

 

Thousands of sacked Bengal teachers marched towards the West Bengal School Service Commission (SSC) Bhawan on Friday, India Today reports, while another section began a relay hunger strike, as the issue snowballed in the state going to elections next year. Carrying placards and shouting slogans against the government, the protesters demanded the segregation of 'genuine' and 'tainted' candidates who took the 2016 SSC examination. Last week, the Supreme Court upheld the Calcutta High Court's decision to cancel the appointments of over 25,000 West Bengal school teachers due to irregularities, the report says.
