Centre proposes limited sale, bursting of green crackers in Delhi-NCR with riders, Hindustan Times

The Union government on Friday urged the Supreme Court to allow the sale and bursting of firecrackers in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), subject to strict conditions and regulatory oversight, Hindustan Times reports. Appearing before a bench led by Chief Justice of India Bhushan R Gavai and Justice K Vinod Chandran, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta submitted a detailed proposal aimed at striking a balance between citizens’ right to celebrate festivals and the need to protect public health and the environment. Jaishankar meets Afghan FM, Indian Express reports

 

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said Friday India will upgrade its current “technical mission” to an Indian embassy in Kabul during his first meeting with the visiting Taliban-ruled Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi. Indian Express reports that this means that India will reopen its embassy in Afghanistan, which was closed four years ago, as a first step towards normalising ties with the Taliban since the group seized power following the withdrawal of US-led Nato forces in 2021. Welcoming the Taliban-led delegation, Jaishankar said the visit marks an “important step in advancing our ties and affirming the enduring friendship between India and Afghanistan.” Read the full report here.

 

Strong 7.4-magnitude quake strikes off Philippines: The Straits Times

A 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck offshore in the southern Philippines early on Oct 10, killing at least two people, while towns near the epicentre suffered structural damage and authorities warned of strong aftershocks, The Straits Times reports. The quake, in waters off the town of Manay in the province of Davao Oriental, triggered a tsunami alert for coasts within 300km of the epicentre, but the warnings for the Philippines and Indonesia were subsequently lifted. The report says there were initial reports of damage to homes, buildings and bridges, one official in Manay said, although the full extent of the damage in the Philippines was not immediately clear. India Today: Islamabad turns fortress amid Labbaik's US embassy march

Pakistan's capital, Islamabad, teetered on the brink of chaos on Friday, India Today reports, as security forces have barricaded major roads leading to the capital with shipping containers and mobile internet has been suspended. On Thursday, lakhs of members of the far-right group Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) attempted to march to the US Embassy in Islamabad in protest of the Gaza killings. The march was blocked by police personnel in Lahore, leading to violent clashes with TLP men, leaving dozens injured and two protesters dead, the report says. Following the crackdown, the TLP has announced its "Final Call" march to Islamabad, as lakhs of protestors camped on the outskirts of Islamabad towards the American mission. Gaza City residents set to return as Israel says ceasefire has started, Al Jazeera reports

 

Palestinian families have begun returning to Gaza City as Israel continued deadly attacks on the enclave until the Israeli military said the first phase of the ceasefire deal went into effect at 12:00 local time. Al Jazeera reports according to a military update on Friday that the Israeli army “positioned themselves in the latest deployment lines, in accordance with the outline of the ceasefire agreement”. Earlier, as displaced families from the southern parts of the enclave moved north on Friday, Israel launched a deadly attack from helicopters on a site east of Gaza City and conducted air strikes in the southern Khan Younis area, according to Al Jazeera Arabic.
