BCCI suspends IPL 2025 indefinitely amid escalating tensions with Pakistan: India Today
The Indian Premier League 2025 has been suspended following a sharp escalation in military tensions between India and Pakistan, triggered by the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, India Today reports. The decision came a day after the match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals was abandoned midway in Dharamsala due to air raid alerts in nearby regions of Jammu and Pathankot. The report says spectators were evacuated amid fears of a possible strike and the IPL chairman Arun Dhumal was also seen helping with the evacuation process on Thursday. Read the full report here.
Indian Express: Rajnath Singh, Shah and Nadda chair meetings to review preparedness
In a statement, the Ministry of Defence said, “Defence Minister Rajnath Singh today chaired a high-level meeting at South Block, New Delhi to review the security situation along the western border and operational preparedness of the Indian Armed Forces,” Indian Express reports. An air raid warning siren was sounded in Chandigarh on Friday morning, alerting the civilians of a “possible drone attack”, Indian Express reports. This comes hours after Pakistan launched multiple drones and missiles targeting border districts on Thursday night, with India’s defence system intercepting them mid-air. The report says blackouts were imposed in multiple areas of Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan and Punjab after explosions were heard in some districts on Thursday night. Read the full report here.
Pope Leo XIV due to hold Mass after becoming first US pontiff, BBC reports
Pope Leo XIV is due to hold Mass in the Sistine Chapel at 11:00 local time, the day after being elected as the new pontiff, BBC reports. World leaders have been offering their congratulations to the new leader of the Catholic Church, the report says. Born Robert Prevost, in Chicago, he is the first North American to be elected pope. The new Pope is seen as a reformer and worked for many years as a missionary in Peru before being made an archbishop there, the report adds. Read the full report here.
Supreme Court sets aside Wikipedia order, Hindustan Times
The Supreme Court on Friday set aside the Delhi high court’s order for the removal of a Wikipedia page on Asian News International (ANI)’s defamation proceedings against the Wikimedia Foundation, which hosts the online encyclopedia, Hindustan Times reports. It said that it was not the court’s job to tell the media what to publish and what to take down. A bench of justices Abhay S Oka and Ujjal Bhuyan reaffirmed media freedom and the principle of open justice, the report adds. Read the full report here.
Kerala Journalist arrested by Nagpur Police for criticising Operation Sindoor, The Wire
The Wire reports that the Nagpur police have arrested a 26-year-old Kerala-based journalist for posting a social media message criticising Operation Sindoor. The journalist, Rejaz M. Sheeba Sydeek, who has been actively reporting on human rights issues in southern states, was arrested at a hotel in Nagpur, the report says. The Lakadganj police station, where the FIR was registered on May 7, has also accused Rejaz of being a member of the banned CPI (Maoist) organisation. Rejaz, who studied social work at Kerala University, has been writing for the Kerala-based news platform Maktoob and Counter Currents. Read the full report here.
