Hong Kong hit by heaviest rainstorm in 140 years, BBC

BBC reports that Hong Kong and southern Chinese cities are battling widespread flooding as the region endures some of its heaviest rainfall on record. On Friday, streets and subway stations were underwater in Hong Kong. The weather bureau said, as per the report, the downpour is the biggest to hit the city in nearly 140 years. Emergency services said more than 100 people had been taken to the hospital and several rescues had taken place. Read the full report here.

 

Bypoll Results 2023 Live updates by The Hindu

 

The results for bypolls to seven Assembly seats in six States will be declared today. The Hindu reports that these bypolls are being seen as a major test for the Opposition alliance INDIA against the BJP-led NDA ahead of the polls in five States later this year. The seven seats went to poll on September 5. These are Bageshwar in Uttarakhand, Ghosi in Uttar Pradesh, Puthuppally in Kerala, Dhupguri in West Bengal, Dumri in Jharkhand and Boxanagar and Dhanpur in Tripura, the report mentions. Indonesia, Brazil demand seat at EU’s green rules implementation

Indonesia and Brazil led over a dozen countries in seeking a voice in the European Union’s implementation of the bloc’s anti-deforestation law, The Straits Times reports. In a joint letter, 17 countries asked for the bloc to involve commodity-producing nations when drafting the implementing rules. The countries also urged the EU, as per the report, to avoid worsening trade disruptions and administrative burden, including from requirements for traceability. Read the full report here.

 

BJP seals a pact with JD(S), NDTV reports

The Bharatiya Janata Party and the Janata Dal (Secular) have an "understanding" for the 2024 Lok Sabha election, ex-Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa said Friday morning. NDTV reports the senior BJP leader said the JDS will contest four seats and that the deal "will help us win 25 or 26 seats". The tie-up is also key for the BJP as it looks to counter momentum being generated by INDIA, the report says. Read the full report here.

 

EU supports India’s efforts for joint communiqué while backing Ukraine in war: Hindustan Times

 

The European Union (EU) supports India’s efforts to finalise a consensus leaders’ declaration for the G20 Summit over the weekend, Hindustan Times reports, even as it remains “firm and united” in backing Ukraine in the face of Russia’s aggression, European Council President Charles Michel said on Friday. Differences between the West and Russia over text to refer to the Ukraine crisis continue to be the main hurdle for a consensus joint communique. The report says G20 negotiators have been engaged in intensive deliberations over the past few days, often stretching into the early hours of the morning, to reach an elusive compromise. Michel made it clear that the EU would not back down from supporting Ukraine or imposing penalties on Russia for the invasion. Read the full report here.
