Yunus lands in Bangladesh to lead caretaker government, BBC reports
Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus arrived in Bangladesh to take over as interim leader, BBC reports. He has declared there is "a lot of work to be done" in Bangladesh. He will be sworn in later. The report adds that his plane touched down just days after Sheikh Hasina - the woman who ruled Bangladesh with an iron fist for 15 years - fled across the border to India. She resigned as prime minister after weeks of student-led protests - which left hundreds dead - escalated and culminated in calls for her to stand down. Read the full report here.
Govt proposes to send Waqf (Amendment) Bill to joint parliamentary panel, Hindustan Times
Hindustan Times reports that Minority Affairs minister Kiren Rijiju on Thursday proposed sending the contentious Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, to a joint parliamentary committee following intense criticism from opposition parties. Several opposition members expressed concerns about the bill’s potential impact on the federal structure and its perceived encroachment on religious autonomy. While Congress MP KC Venugopal described it as an “attack on the federal system,” AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi claimed that the bill violates Articles 14, 15, and 25 of the Constitution, the report adds. Al Jazeera on Israeli forces stepping up attacks, raids in occupied West Bank
Israeli forces have stepped up attacks across the occupied West Bank, Al Jazeera reports, in which at least seven Palestinians, including two children, were wounded. In the week leading up to Monday, Israeli settlers carried out 27 attacks against Palestinians on the territory, injuring 17 people, including two children, and causing damage to property, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). Some 3,070 Palestinians have been forced from their homes due to demolitions, Israeli settler violence and land confiscations in the past 10 months, compared with 1,252 in the previous period, the report adds as per the UN agency. Indian visa centres in Bangladesh indefinitely shut due to 'unstable situation': India Today
All Indian visa application centres in violence-hit Bangladesh will remain closed till further notice due to the "unstable situation" after massive protests forced Sheikh Hasina to resign as Prime Minister and flee to India earlier this week. India Today reports that the Indian Visa Application Centre, on their website, informed applicants that the next date would be informed through SMS and that passports should be collected the next working day. The announcement came after India evacuated 190 non-essential staffers and their family members from the Indian High Commission in Dhaka following the collapse of the Sheikh Hasina-led government on Monday. 2 powerful earthquakes hit off southern Japan, The Straits Times
A 6.9-magnitude earthquake followed by a 7.1 tremor struck off southern Japan on Thursday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said. The straits times reported that the local meteorological agency issued warning of tsunamis striking coastal areas. “Tsunamis will strike repeatedly. Please do not enter the sea or approach the coast until the warning is lifted,” the Japan Meteorological Agency said on X. The report adds that the intensity of the quake that hit at about 4.43pm local time on Thursday was strong enough to pry doors open and crack windows. The tsunami advisory was issued for Miyazaki, Oita and Kagoshima prefectures on Kyushu, as well as Kochi and Ehime on Shikoku. Read the full report here.
