Hindustan Times: 3 killed after speeding SUV runs over pedestrians in Jaipur; 6 critical
At least three people were killed while six others got critically injured, Hindustan Times reports, after a speeding SUV driven by a man under the influence of alcohol crushed around nine pedestrians on a busy Jaipur road late on Monday night. Additional deputy commissioner of police (DCP) (North) Bajrang Singh said, “The car was seized, and the driver was also arrested. He also owns a factory in the Jaipur’s VKI Industrial area." Supreme Court sets aside TN Governor’s reservation of 10 Bills
In a significant decision, the Indian Express reports, the Supreme Court on Tuesday declared as erroneous and illegal the action of Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi in reserving 10 Bills for the consideration of the President in November last year after their due reconsideration by the state Assembly. A bench of Justices J B Pardiwala and R Mahadevan also laid down the timeline for Governors to decide on Bills presented to them, the report says. The bench said that as a consequence, any subsequent steps taken by the President, too, do not survive. In an extraordinary move, the court exercising powers under Article 142 of the Constitution also declared the 10 Bills as having received assent. Read the full report here.
Al Jazeera on record global temperatures in March threatening to climate goals
Global temperatures hovered at historic highs last month, and Europe experienced its warmest March, Al Jazeera reports, suggesting international climate goals could be moving out of reach. The average temperature in March in Europe climbed to above 6 degrees Celsius, which is 0.26C above the previous hottest March in 2014. The average global temperature last month was 1.6C higher than in pre-industrial times, the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) said on Tuesday, the report says. JEE candidates say they missed exam as Pawan Kalyan's convoy blocked way, India Today
A controversy erupted in Visakhapatnam after over 20 students reportedly missed their Joint Entrance Examination (Mains) on Monday morning, allegedly due to traffic disruptions caused by the convoy of Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan. India Today reports that the incident unfolded near the Ayan Digital exam centre in Visakhapatnam’s Pendurthi. Parents of at least 23 students gathered outside the examination centre, expressing anguish over their children being denied entry for arriving late, the report says. “Our children have been preparing for this exam for months. Losing out like this over something beyond their control is heartbreaking,” said one parent. Read the full report here.
Trump threatens new 50% tariffs on China, BBC reports
BBC reports that US President Donald Trump has threatened China with an extra 50 persident tariff on goods imported into the US if it does not withdraw its 34 percent counter-tariff. Beijing retaliated on Sunday, following last week's decision by Trump to slap a 34 percent tax on Chinese imports as part of his "Liberation Day" that set a minimum 10 percent levy on nearly all of America's trading partners. In a social media post on Monday, the report says that Trump gave China until Tuesday to scrap its countermeasure or face the 50 percent tax. Read the full report here.
