Tragedy strikes IAF event in Chennai, 5 dead: Indian Express

Indian Express reports that a day meant to mark a moment of national pride for the Indian Air Force (IAF) turned into a nightmare at Chennai’s Marina Beach, when a crowd of more than 12 lakh people surged toward exits, leaving five dead and many hospitalised. The October 6 air show, held to commemorate the IAF’s 92nd anniversary, was the first such event in Chennai in over two decades. What was intended to be a spectacle of military aviation ended in chaos as the sheer size of the crowd overwhelmed both organisers and local authorities, the report says. Hindustan Times on PM Modi's statement after meeting Maldivian President

 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, after a bilateral meeting with Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, today announced that the two countries will collaborate on several projects in the future, Hindustan Times reports. Muizzu who arrived in India on Sunday on a five-day visit was accorded a ceremonial reception at the Rashtrapati Bhavan earlier today. Maldives is India's key maritime neighbor in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). Read the full report here.

 

Blast kills two Chinese near Pakistan's Karachi airport, BBC reports

Two Chinese nationals have been killed and at least 10 people injured in a suspected suicide attack near Karachi airport in Pakistan. BBC reports that a third body, not yet officially identified, is thought to be that of the attacker. The Chinese embassy in Pakistan said the explosion on Sunday night was a "terrorist attack" targeting a convoy of Chinese engineers working on a power project in Sindh province. The report mentions that the separatist Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), which has in recent years carried out attacks on Chinese nationals involved in development projects in Pakistan, has said it carried out the attack. CBI chargesheet rules out gang-rape, NDTV reports

The Central Bureau of Investigation has ruled out gang rape in the doctor's rape and murder at Kolkata's RG Kar hospital, NDTV reports. It adds as per the CBI chargesheet that Sanjoy Roy, who used to work with the Kolkata Police on a contractual basis, had raped and murdered the doctor. The central agency, which completed the probe within two months, will submit the charge sheet at the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate's court at Sealdah this afternoon. The report adds that the statements of about 200 people have been recorded in the charge sheet that names Roy as the main accused. Read the full report here.

 

Al Jazeera's photo story: Israel's war on Gaza

 

Al Jazeera's photo story explores the before and after satellite images of the Gaza strip that reveal the extent of ruin to civilian infrastructure after a year of war. Gaza, home to some 2.3 million people, bears little resemblance to what it was a year ago, the report says. Israeli attacks have reduced entire neighbourhoods to rubble, erased centuries-old mosques and churches and destroyed vital agricultural lands. In Gaza, at least 41,870 people have been killed and 97,166 wounded in Israeli attacks since October 2023. Read the full report here.
