India Today: Foreign ministry official dies by suicide in Delhi
A senior Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer allegedly died by suicide on Friday morning in Delhi’s Chanakyapuri. India Today reports that the officer has been identified as Jitendra Rawat. Rawat, who was suffering from depression and undergoing treatment, jumped from the terrace of his residential building in the Ministry of External Affairs' (MEA) residential society at around 6 am. Following the incident, the Ministry of External Affairs released a statement confirming the officer’s demise, the report says. Read the full report here.
Supreme Court refuses to halt Dharavi Redevelopment Project, NDTV reports
The Supreme Court today declined to stay the ongoing construction work for the Dharavi Redevelopment Project (DRP), Indian Express reports, refusing to overturn the Bombay High Court's decision in favour of the Adani Group. Hearing an appeal filed by UAE-based Seclink Technologies Corporation, the court said that work on the project had already begun, including the demolition of some railway quarters. Seclink had challenged the Maharashtra government's decision to award the Dharavi project to Adani Properties Limited after canceling Seclink's earlier bid, the report mentions. US and Ukraine officials to meet next week to discuss peace plans, BBC reports
Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky said he is travelling to Saudi Arabia next week, where talks between Ukrainian and US officials aimed at ending the war will take place, BBC reports. The Ukrainian president says he will work "constructively" with Trump to reach a "fast" and "lasting" peace Earlier, US envoy Steve Witkoff said the idea was to "get down the framework for a peace agreement", the report adds. At a summit in Brussels, the Ukrainian president called on European leaders to support steps he's outlined for building a "full and fair" end to the fighting. Read the full report here.
The Wire on a report on Hathras stampede
The Hathras stampede, in which 121 persons were killed during a satsang (spiritual gathering) organised for a self-styled godman last July, could have involved a planned criminal conspiracy to defame the Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government, The Wire reports. This is one of the conclusions drawn by a three-member judicial commission led by retired Allahabad high court judge Brijesh Kumar Srivastava. The 1680-page report – a copy of which was obtained by The Wire – stressed that the organisers of the satsang in Fulrai Mughal Garhi village in Hathras district, Uttar Pradesh, on July 2, 2024, tried to keep the activities at the event under wraps. UN slashes support for Rohingya refugees in Indonesia due to US cuts, The Straits Times
The Straits Times reports that the United Nations’ migration agency has slashed aid to hundreds of Rohingya refugees in Indonesia, according to a letter seen by Reuters and two people briefed on the matter. The report says this is because of massive funding cuts by their biggest donor, the United States. In the letter, dated Feb 28, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) said it would be unable to provide healthcare and cash assistance to 925 Rohingya refugees sheltering in the western city of Pekanbaru from March 5, “due to resource constraints”. Some help would continue for the most vulnerable people, it said. Read the full report here.
